  1. Were there any periods or schools or smiths known to do Takanoha yasurime on one side of the nakago, and Saka Takanoha on the other side of the nakago?

    Menuki ?

I am really disturbed by this. This seller actually had a reputation for selling genuine pieces. I do not know why or wth he was thinking when posting these. This is rediculous.
  3. The only sweating I know of is a heating teqnique used to solder joints................ don't think that would clean menuki well.
  4. Any chance of some pictures of this 1215 blade?
  5. I think the problem is that ebay has ruined the perception of legitimate nihonto sales. So many sellers located in China fraudulently sell "real nihonto" fakes. I am sure no one here doubts your knowledge of Nihonto.
  6. I believe Chris will be bringing in some of the best in the shinsa world. And I am sure each of our blades will get the attention to detail and time they deserve. I can not wait for the shinsa and show. It is the closest one to me, and should be cheaper than flying to cali!
  7. Don't forget to block Minsk, Belerus!
  8. Several pieces have recently been on ebay correct? Are you trying to start a much better nihonto auction, where you won't take fakes or reproductions?
  9. Does anyone have any useful knowledge or links about the more hastily machine made end of war swords? I have aquired a sword that had a leather scabbard marked s/sgt schults and on the back "nita". the leather is almost completely rotted away exposing the saya, and the tsuka was broke. stamped looking flower gunto menuki. The blade is some form of carbon steal, but the tsuba was a thick plate of rusted iron.

While we wait for Ford to post, I will venture to say mercury reduction. That has been in use for a long time, and i very badly woulds like to try it. It's the whole neuro psycological damage/death that worries me.
  11. Chris, I know that i personally think this is great and can not wait. I do not want to speak for the board but I am convinced many of us are very happy. Please keep us up to date with as many details as possible, as soon as possible. Would you possibly be bringing any togi's out this way?
  12. I enjoy them both. the sukashi is very nice looking. I believe I will have a bit of brandy and a fine smoke. I got some new cigars and they have been resting. I looked for a single malt but went with a brandy, but thanks to your post I am now craving a good scotch. Darn you.
  13. Awesome to hear Chris. Last time we spoke nothing was set in stone, so i am really excited. I am going to try and come down personally.
  14. I had heard from a polisher, the laquer protects the hi from damage, as it is hard to repair or polish the inside of the hi.
  15. the 3rd and 4th kanji in the mei are the hardest for me to see the resemblance Kanemori Submitted by kazarena on Mon, 2007-05-14 20:13 包守Kanemori ID KAN162 Province Yamato Era Shoō (1288-1293) School Hirokane Lineage Image / Interactive Source Rating Reference/Page Hawley 15 KAN162 Toko Taikan ¥2M 64 Fujishiro Chu-jo saku http://nihontoclub.com/smiths/KAN162 has this but still too early according to C bowen. 16. yes I understand kozuka is the handle, but I have only seen them refered to kogatana when no handle is present. perhaps just bad luck I always seen them single. I went with kozuka as I have seen many sites sell the kozuka with the blade (kogatana). Funny you mentioned it, as I had kogatana but changed it because of the afore mentioned and because of the story of me actually finding a kozuka in the story description. All that aside, where do I look then for an age apropriate smith. I had found 1 kogatana, that was referenced to this period ( If I was not mistaken ), so it seemed feasible.
  17. If any one has any history or opinion on this I would be very grateful

I wonder which it is?
  19. I see the similarities. very nice thank you. How come they never look the way the characters are typed? I would have never gotten that many characters, maybe just 3 of them.
  20. I aquired this kozuka with a koshirae that was badlymucked. Under the muck and old varnish I found a gold foiled, shakudo kozuka with a gold mythical creature menuki on it. gold and shakudo fuchi, and shakudo with inlay mythical creature menuki. unfortunately the menuki were laquered, and can think of no way to remove this varnish without removing the gold and patina. On the kozuka, the blade has a type of hi, and it is signed in the hi. The blade is very well made, and I am curious what this signature is. Thank you for your time.
  21. is it possible you accidently fingered it? perhaps when putting it back in?
  22. great elephants. they r my favorite animal, and have never really seen them as a theme for Japanese swords. I often wondered if it was because they presented power but not grace. and grace and movement were important to the samurai culture.
  23. I have heard of Acetone helping to dissolve old oil. I will leave this as a question to the more knowledgable so here goes: Because of the extremely fast evaporation of, and the properties that acetone has in affecting oils, is it a safe application for use on a nihonto blade?
  24. I am very interested. any chance of mailing a few?
