  1. Past hour
  2. Wow, some absolutely beautiful items! Like you said, the ones I have do not have the artistry that real netsuke have, mine look like any ol' carver could do, those on the site took some serious skill! Thanks again!
  3. I don't like the blade and the habaki. The Habaki is shinny and looks like the same as on the polish replica. Maybe it is assambled together from parts and the blade is fake whatever. Or it is what it is.
  4. As I posted recently, I do have a tanto which has an actual crack on one side which doesn't show on the other, and which isn't straight, I would recommend getting a camera with a good macro lens, or a strong magnifying glass, to confirm whether it's rust or an actual crack in a layer of the steel.
  5. Thank you all so much for your insights! I have no expertise in Japanese swords but I do trade/collect old masters and gilded bronze works from the 18/19th century. And something about this sword feels off too me in terms of it's components, it feels a little but put together. I will have pictures posted of the Tsuka shortly. But are there any other images which could help discern the quality of this sword better? Let me know! I suppose the only way to judge it properly is to have it viewed in person. I will look into this, but am located in Sweden and fear that there may be a lack of specialists here. Lastly, is there any point in trying to remove the Habaki? or am I better off just leaving it as it is? Thank you, Marcus.
  6. It's interesting that it turns out to be the katana from a daisho - curious he didn't show the pair. Also interesting that the Met included no photos of the blades, just the koshirae.
  7. Not a ton to go on especially for the second one. These are photos I took when I was visiting my dad. I was asking someone about the actual swords, and someone told me to get these looked at if at all possible. not sure if someone could give me an idea of how to find out more about them, or if there's a process for getting them authenticated. both of them are attached to swords that are at least 300 years old, with the more wire-y one having an ichimonji school gold inlay on the inside. sorry that's the best I got as I don't really know much about this art form. any help is greatly appreciated though!
  10. Today
  11. The import process is fairly streamlined now but yea it was a bit messy in the beginning. AOI uses UPS and they will let you know via email if they need additional info and any import duties once it enters customs
  12. Its one of the things which are very hard to value. The carving is relatively modern. Probably no earlier than shinshinto. I like it, I find it attractive, but many will have issues with the execution. Its out of polish. It has butchered nakago and nonsense signature.
  13. Do you have any elements of mountings? Looks like it was mounted in tachi koshirae. Meiji mass production?
  14. worth the polish
  15. I asked a Chinese collector to take a look. He found nothing wrong with Trystan's character identification. However, he cautioned that Chinese inscriptions were molded in and not inscribed. He also pointed out that these hand cannons are referred to by the number of barrel rings, in your case 7.
  16. Anyone have updates for this thread since September? I did a forum search for the word Tariff in the thread title and this was the only one that came up. AOI is currently waiting on my export permit and I paid 65,000 JPY / $414 for shipping which I presume will be UPS since even DHL is paused right now, I've read elsewhere. It sounds like, and correct me if I'm wrong, that UPS knows the process and will just have me pay on their site for the tariffs then deliver it, and only the USPS process mentioned by the OP is a disaster needing an import broker... is that correct? I've previously had UPS notify me to pay the tariffs online before for packages from Europe, which I always pay right away before it even leaves the source country. Hopefully, this is the same way.
  17. Good afternoon, my name is Carolina, I'm from Argentina, Buenos Aires province. I have to sell this old Katana that was from a great-great-grandfather. I was researching forums and they told me to take the handle out of the katana to see its authenticity, and we found that the blacksmith's signature was from Masamune, I wanted to find out its value since we want to put it up for sale but at its real price. I'll send photos. Thank you very much, I look forward to your reply.
  18. Bruce, you probably meant to write URUSHI ? It is close, but not the same!
  19. Daniel, The smith is Yoshifusa and the sword is dated March 1945. As Bruce suggested, the blade would originally have been in the fittings pictured above.
