Stu W Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Hi folks, I recently came across this tsuka. There do not appear to be any identifying marks on it. It was mounted on a mumei wakizashi but the fit was somewhat suspect. I've never seen a tsuka of this description before. Can anyone offer an opinion as to it's origins? Thank you, Stu Quote
Grey Doffin Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 My guess is Meiji or later dock work (made near the dock to sell to departing western tourists). Grey Quote
Toryu2020 Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Stu - Look for Tsutsu-gane - a not so uncommon item and popular during the late Edo-period. I agree with Grey, does not appear to be that old or of the highest workmanship. FWIW -t Quote
christianmalterre Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 perhaps not really that what is mentioned here... have an closer look to those iron fittings, which seem to be forged+that very placement, very near to the Fuchi,of the Ana(which does speak hard for an Ken-Tsuka). Not such fast in attributing-i tend to say.... Not that bad at all! Christian Quote
Guido Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 +that very placement, very near to the Fuchi,of the Ana(which does speak hard for an Ken-Tsuka).The second photo shows clearly that the Tsuka was made for a Shinogi-zukuri or Hira-zukuri blade .... But anyhow, even if it was made for a Ken - what would that change in regard to the quality/craftsmanship of the Tsuka itself? P.S.: Edited to add image. Quote
Soshin Posted January 17, 2012 Report Posted January 17, 2012 Hi Everyone, I would say Meiji Period export quality from what I can see in the photos. I have a mid Edo koshirae for a low ranking bushi and the quality is much better and all but the menuki are iron. The ito is lacquered hemp cloth. Just my opinion. Yours truly, David Stiles Quote
