Hallo,

I saw this Tanto on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 3D1&_rdc=1 but I am a little bit confused. :freak:

I know just Kanemichi (Kojima Tokijiro) which was a RJT, but as I think to know at this time (Showa 9 - 1934) he signed as Kanetoki? Even for my eyes the Mei it seems "wrong"?!

Therefore I would kindly ask for your opinion.

Many thanks.

Hi Klaus,

I think this mei is KUNIMITCHI ("kuni" is written in sosho style)...probably showa smith Kobayashi Kunimichi. See the links above for Japanese Sword Index...Showa oshigata database ...Kunimichi.

You can then do the research.

Hope this helps,

George

Hi George,

You are fully right, this is Kobayashi Kunimichi ((low end) sword smith during Showa period) - sorry it was my fault :dunno:

I always try to read the Mei, but.... :freak:

Many thanks!

Hi,cisco-san,

Mei carving by Kobayashi Kunimichi is too unskilled.

On the other hand, the mei carving of Ebay's the Tanto is very good and beautiful the Sosho characters.

I believe that Kawachi(family name) Kunimichi made this Tanto. 河内国道

Kawachi Kunimichi lived in Osaka.

I have to say that is a most interesting tanto, is there a exact purpose for it, I don't think I've every seen one like that, any one have any other photos of the same style?

As a side note, and dragon apart, I find the lacquer work lovely. It very reminds bizen yaki, beautiful. The lacquer work itself is worth; the tanto shape is interesting but I fear it's all about shape.. nothing else attracts me.

Beautiful signature though.

This was the reason why I tried to read this Mei, but without luck, even the date is not really readable for me (some parts are o.k. but....) :(

I think you are correct. I have seen several showato by Kobayashi Kinimichi and they were average WWII gunto....sometimes he did "Kuni" in the normal way.

This tanto is better quality gendaito...an interesting blade. I have not seen the work of this Kawachi Kunimichi before.

Regards,

Geo.
