Ricke90 Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Hello all! When my grandfather died, i found this sword in he´s basement. And i have no clue what it is really. I wounder that the signs says on the handle. Here is some pictures: This seems to be the right place to ask Quote
cabowen Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Minamoto Nobuyoshi.....looks nice. Get some light oil on it, keep it out of the basement, and read this sites care and handing section.... Quote
Rich S Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 I believe it reads: Minamoto Nobuyoshi. Minamoto = clan name Nobuyoshi = smith's name If I'm in error, others will correct it. Seems Chris and I posted at the same time :-) Rich S Quote
Ricke90 Posted March 13, 2011 Author Report Posted March 13, 2011 Thanks for the translation, and the tips about how to keep the blade in shape I searched for this smith Nobuyoshi, but i didint found any good information about him. So i ask for one more favour. Can some one paste a website with information about this smith Quote
Mark Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 there is too little information provided to be sure exactly what smith made it, Nobuyoshi was a name used by dozens of makers. You could submit it to shinsa and the information you recieve should identify the group and time period to help you narrow it down Quote
Grey Doffin Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Hi, name please, The shirasaya (wooden mounts) appears to be nicely made, which is a good sign. Your pictures show no mekugi, the bamboo pin that holds the blade in the handle. If there is no pin you need to make a new one. Without the pin, the blade can slide down inside the scabbard and break its tip in the scabbard bottom. You can whittle a chopstick for a new pin. If you have the pin, never mind. Grey Quote
Ricke90 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 I didint found any pin for the handle. But now i have made one Thanks for the tips. Mark i still haven´t found the time period yet. But if this sword was made in the Minamoto clan period (wikipedia says it is around 794–1185 ) it need to be somewere around that time. Or is this really true? I can`t belive my eyes, so i think i got someting wrong. And what can the price be ? /Rickard Quote
paulb Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 Dear Rckard, dont get too carried away with the Minamoto clan name. this was used by many genrations of smiths throughout sword history and does not refer to the Minamoto Shogunate that you found in wikepedia. Quote
Ricke90 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 Hehe okej. For me this is really hard to nail down. But now i start to understand abit more. It wounded be so hard to nail it down, if the smith sign there whole name in the sword. And what date he made it :D /Rickard Quote
Mark Posted March 14, 2011 Report Posted March 14, 2011 from shape etc (do not think i even know the length - unless i missed it) probably made circa 1800, maybe a bit older, maybe newer. It is not made prior to 1200, not prior to 1300, etc. Where are you located? Quote
Ricke90 Posted March 14, 2011 Author Report Posted March 14, 2011 It is 75cm long. Ah oki, i thought it was older. I am from sweden Quote
