Gman1243 Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 Hi, looking at purchasing this stamped katana that appears to have been remounted. The site describes it as having "type 98 Shin Guntō" proportions but the nakago and mei look older to me. I'd really appreciate help with Reading the mei, I can make out what might be 日 at the top but I'm guessing past that Any thoughts on likely era / school based on the nakago shape and patina? Whether the koshirae looks like genuine WWII remounting of an older blade, or something else? Anything that jumps out as gimei red flags? Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted May 10 Report Posted May 10 Good that you asked before buying . It is a Chinese fake . 5 1 Quote

Matsunoki Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 I have already told the auctioneer that this (and some other swords in the sale) are fake. I’ve sent 5 messages. They ignore all of them. They know what they have but seem determined to deceive people. unprofessional to say the least. 2 Quote
eternal_newbie Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 What on earth is that hada... even among forgeries it's unusual Quote
The Blacksmith Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 Not hada, simply a rather loose etched decorative pattern I think. 1 Quote

The Blacksmith Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 @eternal_newbie If one had to ascribe a hada pattern to it, I would call it 'camouflage'! 1 Quote
MauroP Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 Really strange, possibly a true Japanese gunto "pimped" by deep etching? 1 Quote
Ian B3HR2UH Posted May 11 Report Posted May 11 Why would anyone take a real Japanese blade then etch it to make it look like a chinese fake , sign it so it looked like a chinese fake and then mount it up to look like a chinese fake ? 1 1 1 Quote
