Just got a new armor. It's unsigned . There are plates with Bonji on the sleeves. Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks to Nick Ricupero for selling this to me.

Hi Gary,

I think you can’t assign this armor as a lump sum to a certain school. Maybe the individual parts like the helmet, the mask or the kote?!

Usually most armors are assembled from parts of different workshops/ schools. The Iwai were known as skilled in this field.

On the other hand, there are also exceptions out there. Gusoku which allow conclusions to be drawn about the school or craftsmen…

Thanks Uwe . I thought the Menpo might have been Myochin but it's not signed.

The kusazuri are detachable, which was an Edo period evolutionary feature.

Thanks for the info. Do you have any idea what the trim might be made of ?

Yak hair, often used to trim a variety of armour components…..mostly Kabuto and Menpo.
(Just the opinion of a total beginner!)

Hi Gary,

this is a set made in West Japan.  I think this counts for all the pieces of the armor.
the Kabuto has a slight akoda shape.  Better pictures would be good, this can also be Sagami work.

the menpo is rather the so called nara-style (from what I see)

the dou, nuinobe, is also rather Nanto style.

the lacing, nice detail here, is als rather West Japanese.

Hi Luc , thank you for the information. The seller told me that he thought it had a Western feel to it.
