Gerry123 Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Hello, I'm from Germany and need help with these two signatures in my 72-plate Suji Bachi Kabuto. Best regards, Gernot Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Possibly meant to be Nobumune…(?) + Kao, but the strokes are not quite right. 信宗 1 Quote
Gerry123 Posted February 2 Author Report Posted February 2 Thank you so much for the answers! I will upload better photos. Maybe several, and the characters individually! I'm finding it extremely difficult to translate this; unfortunately, I mostly only recognize date signatures. Quote
Brian Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Gerry, just type your reply. No need to put it in any box or press anything else. Just type your reply, add the pic and submit. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Gerry, as I said above, this last one is not a kanji, but a ‘Kao’ 花王, an artist’s personal seal or flourish sometimes added to a signature. PS Fusamune has to be a possible reading, but I would compare it to other known Fusamune signatures as it is aiming very high! Quote
Gerry123 Posted February 2 Author Report Posted February 2 Thank you. The kabuto is really very well made. It weighs 2.7 kg without the interior. I definitely think this isn't an ordinary helmet; I think it's quite special. What do you think of the second, longer inscription, which is in the form of a cross? Quote

Gerry123 Posted February 2 Author Report Posted February 2 I sent two pictures in my first post, but apparently only the one with the three characters is visible! I'm sending the photo again! I need to split the signature, otherwise the image will be too large. Quote
Gerry123 Posted February 2 Author Report Posted February 2 This is my signature! Please excuse me, but I'm still getting the hang of posting! Please don't be offended. Gerry Quote
Brian Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Bottom of the thread, there is a box. Just type your reply in there. Then click Submit reply. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted February 2 Report Posted February 2 Stuff I still need to work on, but Tembun 7, November… is visible. 天文七年十一月 Either side of 10 (十) is the old date of Tsuchinoe Inu, 戊戌 土口日 (?… not sure what kind of day this refers to) 1 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted Tuesday at 02:09 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 02:09 AM So if the Mei is legit, an early Tenbun/Tembun date could certainly fit with Fusamune. Quote
uwe Posted Tuesday at 07:01 AM Report Posted Tuesday at 07:01 AM Yes, date (1538) fits for Fusamune… Famous maker if legit! Can you please post some more pictures in the katchū section? Quote
Gerry123 Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM Thank you so much for your help. You've already shed a lot of light on things for me. The kabuto has some age-related damage, and it has a bullet hole in the mae-zashi that most likely came from an arquebus; it wasn't an arrow. It looks very, very old from the rust, and the inside is also in bad shape. I don't think this helmet is a fake; I have similar ones from Edo that look worn differently. So, thank you again for your help. Quote
Gerry123 Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM Author Report Posted Tuesday at 01:12 PM I'm working today, but I'll post photos of the entire Kabuto in the other section tomorrow! Quote
