Andi B. Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Hello, I purchased this little wakizashi tsuba recently and now I'm curious what this motif shows and what it means? The rope seems to be a shimenawa but I'm not sure about the two other objects - are they incense burners? Does anybody has further ideas/information about this kind of piece? Thank you & best reards Quote
Nobody Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Maybe Kanju and Manju. Ref. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5925&p=46150&hilit=kanju#p46150 Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 ...Great balls of fire....obviously a reference to Jerry Lee Lewis Quote
Andi B. Posted November 26, 2009 Author Report Posted November 26, 2009 There are typic hammer/stamp marks visible on the surface. Is this simply a common? style of decoration or do the marks have any meaning as charakters? Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 This tsuba may be Saotome Tembo school. The kokuin may be kanji or some other symbols. Mostly you see sukashi or plain stamped plate, however there are soft metal embellished iron plate examples with zogan. I've read other schools have used tembo plate as the base on which to work. The religious motif fits the pattern. John Quote
Curran Posted November 27, 2009 Report Posted November 27, 2009 My thought was like John's. I see what I thought was a Tembo tsuba decorated with Shinto religious elements (the flaming jewels and rope with paper Quote
