Gents, I rarely buy stuff from eBay, if so, then only accessories. And I bought this one on a whim, actually knowing that no tanto in koshirae can be used with this stand. The seller described it as a stand for kabutowari, jitte, saihai. No tanto will fit, that is sure.

What is this?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Marius, I think maybe the seller described it exactly….have a look at Saihai, jitte and Kabutowari on Google…..that’s what I think this may be intended for.

Colin,

Thanks, but I doubt that. The recess at the base is a hole of only 8mm. That is not enough to accommodate the butt of a handle of a jitte or kabutowari. A tessen? Maybe...

Marius…maybe not the handle butt … but maybe the other end..the “tip” thus leaving the handle uppermost? Just thinking out loud (that’s dangerous for me!)

Colin, I thought about tachi stands, where the sword is "upside down"

Yes, I understand your thinking….who knows? I considered a stand for a large presentation yanone….the ones with the lovely sukashi work. Do you think maybe the fancy silk tassel was meant to hold something in the stand? Maybe a musical instrument….flute?

My impression is that all straight weapons would be positioned quite "bent back" on that KAKE, but I can't see the upper holding fixture properly. Otherwise I thought this might be for a YUMI, maybe a small one. But 8 mm diameter in the lower recess is a bit small for a bow.
