GoldenDrachen Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 Hello gentlemen I have plans to purchase few tsuba this month. List practically ready. I am pretty confident on most of the items I have picked, but not sure about this one. Would like to see if my estimates are correct. Photos are not great, but this is all I have. I think this is a Katchushi. Period, possibly early Edo. Motif is Aoi leafs and feathers. Diameter is 9cm. Thank you in advance Vitaly Quote
Spartancrest Posted April 11, 2023 Report Posted April 11, 2023 I think the motif is 'Snow on Bamboo' leaves, with inome. The two leaves could also be "芦葉 ashi-ba" reed leaves said to be the vessel used when Daruma-daishi crossed the Yangtze River. This one is snow on mulberry leaf https://tsubakansho.com/tag/leaf/ 2 Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 12, 2023 Report Posted April 12, 2023 I don't think there are many early Edo iron tsuba that have never been mounted. May not be as early as you think. Grey 3 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 12, 2023 Report Posted April 12, 2023 Looks like a modern TSUBA to me - 20th century. 1 1 Quote

GoldenDrachen Posted April 12, 2023 Author Report Posted April 12, 2023 Thank you all, gentlemen! The more tsuba I am looking at, the more nuances come up. Of course, while I am a rookie, some red flags will be overlooked. When I am in doubt, I will ask. And once again I am very grateful for all your help! So I will be moving further down the shopping list. Quote

GoldenDrachen Posted April 12, 2023 Author Report Posted April 12, 2023 Ok. First one passed. I'd rather skip it , if there is some doubts. I hope I did better with this one. Already bought. Bushu school. Made by Yoshitsugu. ( Listed in Wakayama book) Tsuba: motif, I think is a bamboo and Aoi leafs. And just to broaden my horizons These books 2 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted April 12, 2023 Report Posted April 12, 2023 Vitaly, this is a pretty little one! Authentic and signed, so no worries! The corrosion on the lower MIMI (rim) may make it less desirable for some collectors, so I hope that the price was correspondingly low. 1 Quote
MauroP Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 Hi Vitaly, I see you have bought the three volumes of "Tsuba - Kodōgu Gadai Jiten", really a valuable resource to understand the cultural contents in Japanese sword fittings. Here you can find a fully searchable index of the three volumes: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/31049-tsuba-kodogu-gadai-jiten/#comment-317709 Quote
