Hey guys I'm new to the Japanese sword collecting scene and am after my first katana or tachi, would prefer in full koshirae but would settle for something in shirasaya, don't have a princely budget unfortunately and would like to keep it around $2000 aud could come up slightly depending on the sword.

Hi Blake,

I think you need to tweak your hunt a bit. 1st, the budget should be in US$, not AU$. At today's exchange rate, AU$2K is too little to get you something worth collecting, especially if it has to be in koshirae. And 2nd, US$2K for a katana in koshirae is, once again, not enough. A decent katana in shira-saya at 2K is doable, or a katana in decent koshirae is more in the $2.5 to 3K range and up. A wakizashi in koshirae at $2K is another viable option. If your 1st piece is mediocre at best, you'll be off to a bad start; best to save a bit more and get something you can enjoy (and recoup your investment when the time comes to move up or out).

As Grey said, consider a wakizashi in fittings, or a katana in shirasaya. If you stretch to US$2K you should find something ok.

I do have a somewhat more expensive (2.2K USD) but papered and mounted katana:
