Louie Skebo Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Hi Guys, probably a repost but I am getting furious emails from guys who can't bid on my swords because they live in the UK. I guess this is a new policy for ebay? I can't seem to find their written policy on it. Ebay is pretty horrible to deal with - and paypal is raping us. I feel for the UK guys. I think the ebay rules are a little nuts, can't buy ww2 stuff with nazi symbols on them either. Louis Quote
Brian Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Yep...eBay has banned UK buyers from bidding. I suggest anyone who wants something should find a contact in the USA to bid for them, and then ship to the UK in compliance with the laws. Someone could set themselves up as a broker. Get the max bid Paypal payment from the potential buyer before the bid goes in, and if it isn't successful a Paypal refund doesn't cost any fees. Something like that... I know Stephen was thinking of setting something like this up (pm or email him to work out the details) and I am sure there will be others. Always a way. Brian Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 I don't mean to be the fly in the pudding, but, consider this. If the sword is outside the US there would be 2 borders to cross and the duty and/or tax to be paid twice. To load money in an account to bid 4% to send to Stephen and 4% to retrieve if unsuccessful. Add 10% to re-direct and second shipping fees. A $10,000 sword would cost $11,500 or so. John Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 You can still create an ebay.com account and then pay using your UK paypal account without issue. Knife collectors are already using this method to get around the ban. There are still plenty of swords in the UK to buy, it just means a return to the old days of hunting them at militaria fairs, local auctions and antique shops. Quote
Louie Skebo Posted April 8, 2009 Author Report Posted April 8, 2009 That is true but currently the only other way around it would be to just make the seller an offer to take it of ebay - which is good by me. Quote
Henry Stewart Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Gentlemen The moderated auction site I mentioned I was setting up is nearly complete. Its seemingly a complicated buisness; However weve reached the dry run stage and i'M PUSHING MY GUYS AS HARD AS i CAN. Henry Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 I can't wait to see what you all come up with Henry. John Quote
Brian Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Ok guys, before this turns too commercial, I'd like to ask anyone interested to take it to pm. Any details can be worked out I am sure between buyer and broker. The main point is, that if you can't bid on a sword, find another way or skip eBay. We will await Henry's site, and in the meantime pm anyone you like and see if you can work a deal and the details. Brian Quote
Kevin Posted April 8, 2009 Report Posted April 8, 2009 Well, I just bid on one. I logged on to the US site and thre was no hassle, If they did give me hassle, I'd just use Tor and go via an American server. An old trick - years ago you hadn't used to be able to get hold of PGP if you were outside the US. It was illegal - so I just set up a proxy connection via a US server and downloaded it anyway.
