PNSSHOGUN Posted March 4, 2022 Report Posted March 4, 2022 Believe this is an officers name, the Koshirae maker seems to make a habit of adding it to the Tsuba. Any help is much appreciated. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 4, 2022 Author Report Posted March 4, 2022 The sword is in early style Type 94 mounts and was brought back from the war with a field officers tassel. I have found two possible matches, I'm leaning towards Yano Tsuneo as this unit saw action in the Dutch East Indies & Balikpapan. The serviceman who brought this back served on Balikpapan at the end of the war. 56th Inf Gp & 146th Division: Lt colonel Yano Tsuneo Kure 3rd Special Naval Landing Party: The commanding officer is listed as Lt Col Yano Minoru 1 Quote
robinalexander Posted March 4, 2022 Report Posted March 4, 2022 So John are you thinking YANO Tsuneo or Lt Col YANO Minoru? Quote
robinalexander Posted March 4, 2022 Report Posted March 4, 2022 The plans drawn up on 16 November 1941, and subsequently signed by the Dutch East India Unit and the commanders of the Navy, specified that the landing on the island of Tarakan would take place on the heavily fortified front on both banks of the Karungan River. Staff officer Yano Tsuneo of the Sakaguchi Division had insisted at the time that he wanted to carry out the operation in a modified manner, regardless of the original plan. When there were no objections, as soon as the department arrived in Palau, he began training to cross the jungle. [1] From German Wiki de.wikipedia Rob Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 4, 2022 Author Report Posted March 4, 2022 Hard to draw any conclusions. If it was Lt Col. Yano Tsuneo it would be an extraordinary coincidence, considering I have the sword owned by Col. Kyohei Yamamoto and these officers worked closely together in the Sakaguchi detachment on the same operations on Tarakan & Balikpapan. Quote
robinalexander Posted March 4, 2022 Report Posted March 4, 2022 Have a hot link re 56th Brigade (Sakaguchi) and 2 Kure SNLF which sheds more light 'coincidence' on the previous link but will PM you as I don't want to digress too much from the original link. Quote
waljamada Posted March 10, 2022 Report Posted March 10, 2022 A "provenance" blade really is another level of cool. Have one type 98 with a name carved on the tsuba but I don't think ill ever be able to attribute it to any individual. Quote
