FZ1 Posted October 26, 2021 Report Posted October 26, 2021 Not buying, just learning! This sword seems to have completely different hada on each side. Is this just the photo lighting or a feature of the sword itself? If its the latter, why are the two sides so different? https://www.aoijapan.com/katanamumei-naoe-shizu/ Any info appreciated. Thanks. ROKUJURO Posted October 26, 2021 Report Posted October 26, 2021 It seems to be a very special sword. The different HADA is probably caused by its miniature size: The weight of the sword 0.55 grams. 1 4 Quote
Ray Singer Posted October 26, 2021 Report Posted October 26, 2021 As a sword is polished down, the jihada may show different patterns in different areas as you go from the healthy kawagane (skin steel) into the deeper parts of the blade. 1 Quote

You may need to research multiple resources in order to find information on any specific maker, but in general Yamanaka's Newsletters revised, Nihonto Koza, Fujishiro/AFU, and Connoisseur's will cover the basic characteristics of what one should and will expect to see in the works of a school. The better known the maker and school the more information becomes available. Quote
b.hennick Posted October 26, 2021 Report Posted October 26, 2021 I agree with Ray. When you look at the photo of the full blade on the left, it shows the effects of being polished down far more than on the right. It could be that blister close to the surface broke open and they decided to polish that side down to get rid of the blister. Looking at the blade's mune should confirm that or not. I have seen different hamon on both sides of the blade but not two quite different hada. 1 Quote

Here is a sword that may help bring this discussion thus far into better focus shall we say https://yuhindo.com/naoe-shizu-katana/ . Quote
Andi B. Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 The hi groove is different on both sides. At least it extends much more into the nakago than on the rough hada side. So it seems it was polished not the same amount on both sides... (?) Quote
ROKUJURO Posted October 27, 2021 Report Posted October 27, 2021 Andi, we cannot know how this happened to the above mentioned blade, but this feature has often to do with the cutting method of the grooves. The tool used is a kind of hand-guided draw knife or scraper, so these grooves almost never have a consistent depth over their respective length. Quote
