Hi Ken,

I can't help with the first one which is above my pay grade. I suspect you will need SteveM or Nobody san for that and to fill in the gaps in the second, but here's something to get you going.

In the second photo, I can't find the kanji on the left in the cartouche at the top so it may not be in modern usage and the one in the circle is unclear. I'm not sure if there's a third one on the right but it isn't apparent in this photograph so you may need to ask your friend for better pictures. Below that, from right to left (first three kanji belong together):

– machi - town

改良; 製 – kairyō; sei – improvement; made in

or Omura or Honmura (I'm guessing a bit with the place name as the kanji aren't very clear).

I like these puzzles...

What do you think about “川町” John? No clue if there is another kanji above, though...

The left top in the cartouche might be “後” ??
First on the left row could also be “木”, underneath apparently two are following?!

Better pics would be nice, Ken!

First one, left side in handwriting, looks like the name of the person who ordered the piece.

Maybe 村田様 Murata-sama

Can't make out the next line. The line on the right: 本??

Everyone's got the hot-stamp right. The horizontal bit on top is probably 越後 (written right to left, with the circle in-between). The circle probably has 木 in the middle.

Then vertically it says, as everyone mentions:

木村, 攺良製  using a variant of 改, and maybe in this case it means the tansu was renovated?

And then 川町 again as Uwe mentioned.
