Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 Just got this for a song from Buyee. It is beautiful old carved wood and I think it was in a temple I love Japanese wave designs. If anybody ever hears about a nice genuine Kano Natsuo wave, let me know. 3 Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 You turned me on to Buyee Stephen, and I thank you! 1 Quote
Frank B Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 What are the dimensions? It looks better than most mingei wood carvings of the early 20th cent. It could be older, however. Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 It's 60cm (about 24 inches) long and 26.5 cm ( about 10 inches tall). What period do you put it in Frank? I don't have it in hand yet, but the wood appears to have some age to it. Quote
Frank B Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 So it has some decent size to it. Being conservative, I'd say Showa, but it could in fact be late edo. It's an attractive carving. Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 I love these waves by Natsuo, which can be found in Darcy's archives. 1 Quote
Pete Klein Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 https://yuhindo.com/kano-natsuo/ Robert - I'm assuming you saw these awhile ago but just in case and for others who might not have seen them before. PS: LOL - great minds think alike and apparently at the same time! Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 Thanks Pete! Yes, I wonder what those set back the new owner?! I have seen photos of a set where one was gold and one was silver. Beautiful. Quote
Frank B Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 Yeah, those wave natsuo menuki have always been a dream for me. Would probably have to sell everything I own to afford those sadly. Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 Yea, those are the ones Stephen. Are they in a museum or private collection? I think they are wonderful, with the sun and the moon, the waves and the clouds. Fabulous. Quote
Pete Klein Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 They are in the collection of the Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum: http://www.sannenzaka-museum.co.jp/index_e.html This is a great book of the collection when you can find one: http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/books/b951-late-edo-and-meiji-period-sword-guards-and-fittings Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 Robert, Nice wave, perhaps late edo/-meiji. Are there any remnants of pigment? p.s.- the menuki are exquisite....the time to start saving would be NOW. Quote
Surfson Posted May 20, 2018 Author Report Posted May 20, 2018 Hi Steven. I will check it when I receive it. Thanks for the tip on the book - it looks great and I will see if I can find it. I'm sure for what you would have to pay for those menuki you could buy a very nice mounted katana! Cheers, Bob Quote
Pete Klein Posted May 20, 2018 Report Posted May 20, 2018 The menuki DB had were around 40K so yeah, more like a Juyo katana. Quote
