Peter Bleed Posted October 16, 2017 Report Posted October 16, 2017 Could it be "Yoshimichi"? And are we sure this is a "Daimyo"? It reminds me of a Sumo umpire,. A late Edo sumo-sans guard? Peter Quote

Peter Bleed Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 Yup, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Look at this dude right there in Wikipedia! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumo#/media/File:Kunisada_sumo_1851.jpg P Quote
sabi Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 Haha that's brilliant. You learn something new everyday! Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 Big dude! From his size, he could be holding a kodachi or a katana! Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 Photos too blurry to see the Mei properly. Nice focus on his nose, though. PS If you edit the photo in your camera, Bruno, even very slightly, and then push 'Done', this will prevent the photo from turning on its side when you post it. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 I couldn't be Shoki could it? http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/shoki.shtml Quote
Guido Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 I couldn't be Shoki could it? That was my first thought, too, although he's usually depicted with a Chinese jiàn instead of a Japanese tachi. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 17, 2017 Report Posted October 17, 2017 Or, how about Zhang Fei (Chohi) of the peach garden? http://dasenkunda.hatenablog.com/entry/2015/06/11/013541 Quote
Kurikata Posted October 17, 2017 Author Report Posted October 17, 2017 I hope this picture will be of better quality for identifying the last kanji. Any way, I tend to consider this tsuba more a Daimyo representation rather than shoki or any Sumo. Thank you anyway for your interest Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 18, 2017 Report Posted October 18, 2017 Ah, thank you for this photo, Bernard. I just noticed that he's holding a Gunbai in his right hand. If you wish to stay with Daimyo, how about Takeda Shingen? http://pds.exblog.jp/pds/1/200707%2F30%2F82%2Ff0022982_17293337.jpg Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted October 18, 2017 Report Posted October 18, 2017 Also he is sitting cross legged..........observing the progress of Battle? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty-Four_Generals_of_Takeda_Shingen Artistic licence to dispense with the folding camp stool? Quote
