Bruce Pennington Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 Saw this on an auction site, what do you think? My first thought was poor WWII fake gunto. The kabuto-gane, if it's supposed to be WWII, is off, but it's better made than most fakes. The seppa looks WWII legit, though, but with civilian tsuba. The blade has a good look to it, but the habaki looks like a new replacement. Then I noticed the double mekugi, therefore long nakago. I vaguely remember seeing some old katanas with kabu and other fittings that resembled WWII fittings (or should I say it the other way around!) and started to wonder if this is maybe something old. Thoughts? https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/47230197_antique-Japanese-wwii-samuri-sword-1945-with Quote
Mark Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 my opinion is that it is real. Showa civilian style katana converted for army use. Poor condition, limited value. If signed probably has a Showa stamp Quote
vajo Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 The kabutogane is from a handachi koshirae. I think i see a hamon. The Tsuba looks terrible cheap for me. The tsuka ito and the same is also cheap looking. But, the blade shape looks like a long word. The kissaki is not like a regular gunto. With the two mekugi it could be a short tachi blade. Quote
Stephen Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 why are we asked with pictures like that? Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted August 20, 2016 Author Report Posted August 20, 2016 why are we asked with pictures like that? Ha! Yes the auction sites are pretty bad about knowing what and how to show a sword! I'm still learning and was anxious to hear and learn by getting the opinions of more experienced collectors, like yourself! Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted August 20, 2016 Report Posted August 20, 2016 Mark nailed it. No further opinions needed. 1 Quote
Jamie Posted August 21, 2016 Report Posted August 21, 2016 You'll learn more if you look at good swords, rather than treasure hunting from auction pictures. Quote
Stephen Posted August 21, 2016 Report Posted August 21, 2016 Mark nailed it. No further opinions needed. The BOSS has spoken,,,,LOL Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted August 21, 2016 Report Posted August 21, 2016 Hahaha. That's not exactly what I meant. I meant Mark is correct in my opinion - which is worth every bit of what he paid for it. Quote
