Pete Klein Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 Just in from Japan, which I believe to be Ko Mino work. Heavy gold uttori with what might be a kiri komi on the upper left: Nifty! Quote
Curran Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 I was seriously considering buying this. Trying to behave, as have lots of expenses coming up. Glad it went to a great home. Quote
John A Stuart Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 ...and I would have jumped at it too. Good condition and the break detracts not the slightest. John Quote
Soshin Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 ...and I would have jumped at it too. Good condition and the break detracts not the slightest. John Hi John S., What break? I don't see any. :? Pete K., nice kogai. Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 13, 2013 Author Report Posted September 13, 2013 If you look at the upper left, just above the jita you will notice a smallish projection downward. That is the result of a strike of some kind which forced the edge of the Do laterally downward. I cannot photograph it but it has a lateral component and an angulated V shape which might be associated with a kiri komi. There is not way to prove this of course therefore I mention it only as a possibility. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 13, 2013 Report Posted September 13, 2013 If it were me, I would get that nick fixed. Ford might be the man to ask. Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 13, 2013 Author Report Posted September 13, 2013 I find this example to be perfect wabi kodogu, perfect in it's imperfections, transcendental in it's quiet, most beautiful imperfections. To 'correct' it would be as if to give a face lift to an elderly person who's life is illustrated by their well earned features. I would rather commit seppuku. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Only a joke! Everyone has become so serious. See you at the DTI. Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 14, 2013 Author Report Posted September 14, 2013 No, you won't. Not going. Quote
Curran Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 If we're counting, I agree with Pete. Wouldn't touch it. Pete worded it better than I could. Envy the purchase. Focusing elsewhere in my study and collecting, but desire a top level ko-mino tsuba some day. It is perhaps a bit more realistic than my far future acquisition of an elegant Tokubetsu Juyo grade Sadamune tanto. Pete- while we have your attention... any comment on those half dozen Juyo Kodogu up on Yahoo!Japan right now? It is beyond my non-Google translation ability to translate how the bidding on them works. Not that I'd even try, as aforementioned Nihonto bills loom Oct. 1st and Dec. 1st. Quote
Henry Wilson Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 I find this example to be perfect wabi kodogu If we are talking about the nick and the effect it has, I wonder if the kogai really is wabi? Such kind of imperfections that are associated with wabi are usually due to wear and tear over time. I know it is splitting hairs as one man's this is another man's that, but maybe the word is being used a bit lose here. From our old friend Wiki: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wabi-sabi Wabi now connotes rustic simplicity, freshness or quietness, and can be applied to both natural and human-made objects, or understated elegance. It can also refer to quirks and anomalies arising from the process of construction, which add uniqueness and elegance to the object A quick search on wabi reveals these images https://www.google.co.jp/search?client= ... YFo&q=wabi Pete's kogai (lovely as it is) evokes different sentiments compared with the images google provide in my opinion. Just some thoughts. Quote
runagmc Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 I love these little cuts in between the flower petals. The shape that they give to the petals, along with the petals being different sizes, adds a lot of character, IMO. Very nice piece Pete.. As far as the small damaged spot, it probably could be pushed back in place to be made less obvious, but it sounds like the consensus is for leaving it alone, which is probably best... Quote
kaigunair Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Looks like a very elegant piece. Looking forward to more detailed pics. I must admit, like top level goto pieces, I don't have the sense of refinement to fully appreciate it yet, but am glad to see and read about it. Thanks for sharing it Pete! Quote
Brian Posted September 14, 2013 Report Posted September 14, 2013 Really like this Pete, I think the colour of the shakudo is great, as is the work. Hope you can send us some more close-ups. Which auction site is best in Japan, and which proxy service are you using? The nick doesn't detract, it is in great condition. Brian Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 14, 2013 Author Report Posted September 14, 2013 Thanks for all the likes. Domo. Actually, it's already on it's way back to Japan for Shinsa. I got to look at it for a whole afternoon! LOL! Just the way it goes. Quote
