menpo Posted May 23, 2013 Report Posted May 23, 2013 Hi guys This isn't really my best subject so I thought I'd ask the experts. I recently purchased banner as a display piece and was wondering what the inscription on the reverse side related to. There are a couple of dates on it which I've tried to work out and I've got dates ranging between 1844 to 1860 but the other kanji in between the dates I'm having trouble with. There is only one clan listed as using this mon and it was the Kano clan of ichinomiya who's dates are between 1826 to 1871. If anyone has got any ideas on what the inscription says or is about I'd be most grateful. Thanks guys Gethin Quote
k morita Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 Hi, How wide? I think it is not a banner, maybe, cloth which covers a contribution thing(?) Quote
george trotter Posted May 24, 2013 Report Posted May 24, 2013 also, can you show us the other side please? Regards, Quote
menpo Posted May 24, 2013 Author Report Posted May 24, 2013 Hi guys Sorry for the late reply. Thank you for your help Morita San. The length is around 160cm and its about 130 cm wide. I've taken a picture both sides. It's almost diamond shape so I don't know what it would have been used for or what would have been with it if it was dedicated to a temple. Anyone have any ideas or thoughts? Also, why so many dates? Thanks again gents Gethin Quote
george trotter Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 Thanks for the pic Gethin. If it has a hole at the straight edge then I think it is a cloth cover or bag (fukuro) for something. Maybe as mentioned, it is a cover for a shrine offering, or a cover for a parade object? Just don't really know. Regards, Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 The Mon appears to be crossed Oak leaves in a medium thickness circle, 中輪に Chigai-kashiwa 違い柏, right leaf over left. Quote
Baka Gaijin Posted May 28, 2013 Report Posted May 28, 2013 Good morning all, Sorry to come late to the thread. Morita san has the correct answer I believe. The shape resembles an item called "Uchishiki" which is an item for a Buddhist altar display, they can range in size from small to massive depending upon the altar. The longer edge is set upon the altar shelf with the Kamon part hanging over the lip making a triangle as you look at it, so to speak. An object or offering would be placed on the area which in this case is a white rectangle. http://www.mfa.org/collections/object/b ... shiki-9544 I agree with Piers that the Kamon is Maruni Chigai Kashiwa, sometimes called "Daimyo Oak" The reason for so many dates is I believe when the item or items were offered for either donation or blessing. (Out on a limb time: Red was sometimes used as a reference to Amida Buddha, White was a reference to Dainichi Nyorai). Cheers Quote
menpo Posted May 28, 2013 Author Report Posted May 28, 2013 Hello Gents. Thank you all very much for your informative replys. So would i be right in assuming that each date corresponds to a different offering? What sort of objects would be offered? I'm sorry for all the questions but it really isn't my subject but I find fascinating! Thank you all again for your replys. Gethin Quote
