DaveM4P99 Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 How should I protect / preserve an old leather-covered army saya? Armor all? Or some other leather preserver? I don't want it to dry out and become too brittle. Thanks! Quote
Brian Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Dubbin or beeswax. Google for leather saddle treatments. Brian Quote
b.hennick Posted February 10, 2013 Report Posted February 10, 2013 Leather cpr is a great product to both clean and soften leather. It is available on eBay and from the manufacturer. I bought and used a small container and then went for the large size. Quote
DaveM4P99 Posted February 11, 2013 Author Report Posted February 11, 2013 Great thanks guys...good advice. Quote
Jareth Posted February 13, 2013 Report Posted February 13, 2013 I'd do a small test. Most if not all products will either darken or change color of old leather. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted February 15, 2013 Report Posted February 15, 2013 Leather first changes the colour when it dries out, it usually becomes brighter. Applying a quality leather care (as recommended, saddle grease is best) of course brings back the original colour. A good leather grease contains natural ingredients like bees wax but no mineral oil or vaseline. Linseed or TUNG oil will harden the leather which is what you want if the material has become too soft and flexible. Quote
