If this tsuba wasn't signed I would have thought it was a very good example of Mito work. For some reason I have always admired tsuba whose design wraps around the rim onto the reverse. John

It has actuallly been shot by Minamoto no Yorimasa but his retainer, Ii no Hayata finishes it off. Famous work by Yoshitoshi: http://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/gallery ... 03_SE.html

Congrats on your memory :-) I happen to have the 100 Aspects print with Yorimasa, after having shot the Nue. And I love the 36 ghosts series, though I do not have the Hayata print.

Taking a break from marathon of work,

glad I did and visited NMB.

 

Thanks to Mike and especially Mariusk (thanks for that link),

learned a bit more Japanese mythology that I had not known.
