Take a picture of the entire blade from directly above the mid part. This shows the sugata or tip to toe image for understanding the blades shape. -
Dan why not ask David Stiles whome you purchased it from? He should know exactly.

Hi Does the belief that very short Gunto were made in WWII for tank or submarine officers have any basis in fact? I've one arriving tomorrow that's hand made traditional blade but pretty short. It's in Shingunto mounts of some type. Thank you Adam

Yes Bruce dremmel could do that but what were they doing with it? We'll never know I guess. I would be surprised if that was worth the cost of polishing. Do you have a polisher in mind? -
Can we see the front?

Good stuff Matt, thank you.

I think I've got him One of his works here very yari like yoroi doshi https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D9WXJ7aCCY0Q&ved=2ahUKEwjX1uDbjafrAhUPTcAKHT_NAnIQFjAAegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw0CkW7N5pceB7PAnRjRBk2J 1865-68 Musashi, so a very short period. I think it's going to be hard to find mei from this Smith.
-
Matt do we know why this Smith deviated in the Kanji used at this "school" do you have any other references to the Smith Masayuki perhaps oshigata of the mei? Thank you for the mei confirmation 😊

Suishinshi MASAYUKI I thought SUISHINSHI 水心子 so it's a bit odd. His master signed Suishinshi MASAHIDE 水心子正秀 His master was born in Kansei 3 (1750), in Akayuzai 赤湯在 (now in Nanyou city, Yamagata pref.) as a son of Samurai who lived in Yamagata domain. 2nd Gen signed Suishinshi MASAHIDE 二代水心子正 What have I missed here or got very wrong ? Thank you Adam

Not a drill, the marks are not consistent with a circular motion a drill would make. This is more a reciprocating motion. With a drill even if it slipped you would have elliptical signs or spirals. I see the new drill hole so it's a good call but I don't believe right. We may never know but it's certainly ruined that sword for me. -

Just the strange marks on the top of the Nakago then. Trick of perspectives. Do you intend to get it polished only the damage to the Nakago reduces its expected values considerably. I would probably not spend the money unless this smith were a massive name and the blade an exceptional study piece. To me personally and with no offence its kinda "had it" so to speak. -

It might be someone cut off the tsuka with a grinder. Blade looks welded on or is that my imagination? -
As I said here it's not quite in my comfort zone deal wise albeit I'm not historically good at deals anyway

Any pictures Piers?

That's very useful thank you. This thread has run its course.

It would be highly unusual one would think, for an obscure Smith to have his signature copied yet looking at Rays three examples side by side they all show notable similarities and notable differences. This sort of shows perhaps an evolution of mei and might just prove that variances are not always confirmation of Gimei status being the right call ? Perhaps when looking for confirmation of a mei we should be looking for the similarities and less so the differences?

As I'm no an egotist I'll say I don't see it. I've absolutely no experience of modern blades or the tricks used to pass them off as something else. I can see the suspicious rust where a stamp would be .this would have been a flag in itself. I don't see buffing or anything like that. Just looks in polish. Thank goodness I don't REALLY collect swords. Still I wasn't stupid enough to buy without consulting the good people on here.

I will walk away gents. Thank you for the steering. I was not aware it had been buffed no. It just looks in Polish to me. Your way better at this than I. What's the giveaway it's been buffed?
