    These are presentation swords, from the early Showa Period. Most came with Showa To, however, I have seen one with a Gendaito.

    Michael, I agree with you there. Just because there is an accepted date, doesn't mean that everything changed overnight. I have another one I find interesting. I have a Harima Ujishige katana dated 1789. By the date, it's classed as Shinshinto, however, I would still class it as Shinto.

    I have a Dotanuki Kozukenosuke. According to records and book listings, he listed as Shinto, 1596- 1615. However, the Sugata, is definitely Momoyama! Personally, I would still class this sword as Koto. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a nengo.

    Looks like late Edo Mino, to me.

    I haven't seen one for awhile. They usually have Mokume or Omokume hada, with a Mino style Hamon and Hataraki.

    John, I think you mean Late Meiji. His first ten years are classed as Shinshinto.

    Also, Sadakatsu is third Gen, in the modern Gassan Tradition. Sadayoshi, Sadakazu, then Sadakatsu.

    Two things, do you like it and is it priced right? If both are yes, then go for it.

    You can't go by the Koshirae. I've seen Koshirae where the Tsuka has a very pronounce curve, but the Nakago doesn't.

    Tori. Take a piece of string and run it from the bottom of the Nakago to the tip of the Kissaki. This will show where the centre of the curve is.

    Anthony Museums as a rule don't value them very much and don't look after them. Usually just put away in a store room, unless the Museum has need, ie Military Museums etc.

    There's a Sword Shop in Kumamoto. Sorry I don't know the actual address, but it's close to the Castle and the International Business Centre. I actually bought a Gassan Sadakazu there.

    I saw a great documentary called the Iron Road. It traced the trade backwards and came to the conclusion that it was the Hittites, who first forged iron. I believe there is some mention in Egyptian chronicles that when they came across these superior weapons that the Hittites now had, it was a big shock.
