Shot some pictures today...
Ray Singer replied to ChrisM's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I had the same concern that Ed mentioned above. I used one of these machines recently when directing a short film (not sword-related) and there was a bit of thin residue where the "fog" condensed on the surfaces. -
On the left, not clear on my mobile device. ___ Yoshimitsu.
-
On the right, Ishihara Kanetada
-
I don't see that Stephen is complaining about anything. The concern appears to be that Bob might feel inundated with too many NMB referrals. I have always found Bob to be patient and generous with his time though, and would not worry. I expect he will give insightful feedback, but as said above one must be prepared to receive the bad with the good.

Tachi Sword Tang is signed Nagamitsu - which Nagamitsu is it?
Ray Singer replied to tbonesullivan's topic in Nihonto
David agreed, I think it is evident that this is a koto blade. -
Tachi Sword Tang is signed Nagamitsu - which Nagamitsu is it?
Ray Singer replied to tbonesullivan's topic in Nihonto
As Mark indicated, you may want to consider the possibility of gimei (signature is not authentic). There were many smiths who legitimately signed Nagamitsu, however these tachi-mei Nagamitsu are often meant to be passed off as authentic examples of the Kamakura period Bizen smith who used that mei. -
WAS THIS SWORD ( BLADE) MADE BEFORE 1921

Perhaps Kanenobu? 兼宣 -
No longer available, thank you anyway to those who inquired. Please archive.

Iijima Masayuki This is a gendaito by the smith Iijima Masayuki in truly exceptional and long shin-gunto koshirae measuring 41.75". I have posted a number of photos below so that quality and condition of the koshirae can be seen. The blade has an elegant sugata with deep sori and a wide gonome hamon in ko-nie with slanted ashi. As is typical of this smith, the mei is stamped. Nagasa : 69.8cm Motohaba 31mm Saki-haba 21mm Kasane 7.5mm
-
Sori is 1cm. And sorry, I have agreed to place on hold for a buyer on Facebook. If it becomes available again I will update this post.

Hi Chris, as much as I would like to do so it is consigned for a friend who needs to sell. I would not be able to arrange a trade for this piece. Thank you for your inquiry. Best regards, Ray

Blade quality is excellent. Some scuffing, stains etc. No issues that I can see. Hamon has a somewhat Bizen feel, but there are sections of togari showing Mino influence. The only real issue with the sword is the losses to the saya, which was once a very good one.
-
This is a very beautiful Shinto daito in a kyu-gunto mounting. This is the type of kyu-gunto koshirae in the sakura are neji-menuki. Hamon is a gonome choji-ba with much activity. Boshi is filled with hakikkake. Nakago is ubu mumei with three mekugi-ana. Saya is black lacquer with a shakudo kojiri. which the Some cracking and losses. Habaki is silver foil. 62.2cm nagasa. SOLD

Yes, I saw that one as well (thanks for sending the link though). It is the only other example I have been able to locate. Perhaps this smith was a kogatana specialist, like the 'Saburo Kaneuji' line of kogatana smiths in Shinto times.
-
Does anyone happen to have information on this smith? I do not see him documented anywhere. He was, from what I can see, an excellent kogatana smith, 品川入道内一作 Shinagawa Nyudo Uchikazu Saku Kind regards, Ray

Shobu Zukuri Yasunori (fake?)
Ray Singer replied to DoTanuki yokai's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I believe that is the alternate account for Changtian_swords. Based out of Rockville Maryland and known seller of Chinese fakes. -
Yes, these are the correct torokusho for your sword (reading Geishū jū Teruyuki). Please be aware that these are simply registration papers. They do not indicate anything related to authentication, quality, collectability, etc. All swords in Japan are required to be registered. The papers are dated March 20, 1969.
-
Thank you for clarifying this. Kind regards, Ray

Hi Robert, as I was saying earlier I have some skepticism about the shoji-mei however I would also like to know the reading of those two kanji in Gilles' sword. It does not appear to be a name.

Thoughts on possible age of this blade?
Ray Singer replied to Logan09's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I would second John's vote. My feeling is as well is that this may be Nambokucho. Looks like a promising sword. Hope it gets into the hands of a licensed togishi / shinsa for evaluation. -
Perhaps someone here with more familiarity with the language can better translate '玄番頭'. I am uncertain if head-of-household is the best translation or if this is some other type of more formal title.
