The Sword of Japan by J. W. Bott costs about $15 (paperback - hard cover is more but not much more) from Lulu and like most books goes on sale regularly. It is a great beginner book - best for the buck book. I would encourage beginners to buy that one. There is a lot to learn in it and for the price you really have a bargain. I recommend it to beginners. There should be no barrier to purchase a book that is under $20 delivered to the door. Dec. 10th Lulu has a BOGO deal. Buy one get one. You can get two and give the second one as a Christmans/Hannukah gift.

1. Take personal responsibility The Toronto sword club (J.C.C.C. Token Kai) had a meeting today. The topic was Soshu swords. We had 6 new people at the meeting. There were over 20 Soshu Den blades to look at and handle. Five of the six new people were under 35. Four of the five owned a sword or more. One person had several good swords that he brought to the meeting. Sooo all is not doom and gloom. We work at both inviting people to join our club and making presentations that are accessible to new members. If there are two or more collectors in an area you too can start a club and bring in new members. If you go to gun shows bring flyers about meetings. If you are involved in Martial Arts post signs at your club or clubs of friends. Personally invite instructors to come to a club meeting. 2. Use social media - as Darcy suggested in another thread we need to make our hobby relevant to younger people want electronic information rather than paper information. 3. If you are a member of a sword club ask others to join. Please join the JSSUS. True we have a print based Newsletter but we do use our membership funds to pay for translations of work into English. Hello: I, a Canadian collector, contacted a couple of US insurers of collectables and they only insure in the USA. In Canada they want to insure swords as the same as they use for diamonds 1.5% of value. I suggest that you buy a good safe and have an alarm system. Make sure that the safe is bolted to the floor. Even then, a pro will take what he wants when he wants. I have seem some interesting hidden rooms and hidden safes. You might want to look into those.

Dan Ken made a Kenshaku - a device used to measure sori. The device helps you to determine the location of the deepest sori and the magnitude of the sori. Without such a device the best you can do is to hold the sword with the tang vertical and at arm's length and then look at the whole blade to determine the deepest part. You can also lay the blade cutting edge up on a table with the machi at the end of the table (blade runs perpendicular to your seated position).and the point toward the center of the table.

It might have started life as a katchushi tsuba with decorations added later.

All are interesting. Three seem to be made from kashira and three from menuki. It was fashionable at one time.

A friend called to ask for information and advice. A well-known dealer in Japan wanted to ship swords to a person in Canada. He used FEDEX in the past. This time the swords were refused for shipment from Japan to Canada. Reproduction swords were accepted but not antique blades with export permits. 1. Please post any helpful information that you have on this situation. 2. Please suggest an alternative shipper for swords to Canada from Japan.
