Hi Randy I bought the tsuba book but couple it with the anatomy book that looked interesting I saw that shipping would be reduced for multiple buys The anatomy book was dirt cheap so it helped with the combined price I'll let you know more when I get them

I have this on my watch list

Hi Prior to posting this item I searched 'kantei tsuba' and there were a few 'hits' but these only show isolated examples such as 'a kantei point for this tsuba is......... I see over and over again nihonto analysed using kantei points and I wonder if this was because there are so many recorded and salients points for a maker/school I have just had papers for an Owari Daisho that I showed to Bob Haynes Anyone who has been helped by Bob will know how kind, helpful and considerate he is with a novice collector With this set it he was so adamant they were not Owari, not a daisho or even made at the same time! He said this in the kindest way possible but I could detect he was disappointed with the papers which is echoing what the previous replies are saying Grev UK

Sotherby's Caldwell Prices
kissakai replied to kissakai's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I saw it had a high estimated price Almost back to topic, lets assume the demand/price has gone down so if I find the owner and offer £1000 all's fine! Obviously it would should demand a high price I suppose it is a very long shot that it is owned by a NMB member Grev UK -

Hi Arnold From a scholar and gentleman as you are I only get good advice and an honest opinion - thanks It's funny how you develop as a collector, for me although I have some nice older pieces that Ford has helped me appreciate am very proud to own tsuba by Kevin Adams and Marcus Chambers that are a delight I'm still looking for a really nice kyo sukashi tsuba and a good kogai that are within my price range and as soon as I get them there will be something else on my 'must have' list In the catalogue that started this post 'Southerby's Japanese Sword Fitting from the Caldwell collection?' No59 is my current favourite tsuba Grev UK -
Sotherby's Caldwell Prices
kissakai replied to kissakai's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
I've just seen this in 'Japanese Sword fitting - Naunton Collection - H.L.Joly' A very similar pattern although not as close as the previous example and the image is not very good No 628 Sentoku, chased in the shape of a closed knife "betal cutter" with dragon and karashishi at the ends. Signed Kunishige of Hirado - Late 1700 Grev UK -

Hi Arnold It was posted only because I found something similar to mine that seemed to clarify some points You make very valid points about why you should buy and if bought only for a possible investment it is an unwise thing to do As I said earlier I bought it because I liked it and not as an investment Grev UK -

Rare Finds In Searching For Copper Tsuba
kissakai replied to Stephen's topic in Auctions and Online Sales or Sellers
Hi Stephen If it was cheaper it would be great to take it to a Nihonto meeting claiming something like the amazing coloured hamon Then sit back and watch the fun Grev -
Hi Daniel I think you have the info you required and looking at the various images I think you can get to an approximate date Grev UK
-
Hi Daniel I think there were around six or seven generations The earlier the better and this is down to how well they were made (the devil is in the detail) You will find examples on the web for the mei (signature) and I suppose this is late around 1850 Early Edo is post 1600 so much later than suggested The mei has been cut into for fitting on another sword so some liked it Nothing wrong with an honest tsuba and a nice gift Although there are many Kinai tsuba they are not a 'collectors' item unless of the highest quality but someone called James Lawson has bought the best ones! As these are not too expensive you could look and maybe buy these from the internet and if you do pop an image on this site stating the price if known to ensure it is not a copy I have four Kinai for sale on the items for sale on this site, the post is called 'Massive Tsuba Sale' I'm not interested whether you buy or not but worth looking as Kinai examples Grev UK
-
Hi Daniel Just do a search for 'Kinai' tsuba and you will find this tsuba Grev UK

I wanted #25 but had gone about 1/2 hour before I saw the post Grev UK
