  1. I found this small picture online but there was no information about it other than it being a very old tachi. Wondering if anyone has any insights?
  2. I believe most museums, at least those which don't specialize in Nihonto displays but still have weapon collections use Renaissance Wax to protect them because it is so long lasting and low maintenance. I couldn't see most museum staff religiously oiling their swords like a serious private collector. Personally every six months I reapply the highest grade gun oil I'm aware of, Wilson Combat Ultima Lube in the lightest viscosity they offer. Definitely never any off the shelf Wal-Mart stuff.
  3. If the seller had a little more Ebay savvy I think we would have had a lot more competition. He didn't have the word "Japanese" in the listing title so anyone with a search notification for "Japanese Sword" wouldn't have received an email. Also he had it ending on a Wednesday at 12:15 PM when folks are at work, a smart seller will time his listing to end on a Sat/Sun evening when more people are at home with their eyes on their computers. Interestingly one entire side of the blade is much more refined than the other with a somewhat visible hamon, yokote line etc. while the opposite side is more rough and scratched. Maybe as if a polish was started but never finished? I'll likely be listing the Seki blade this weekend, feel free to have at it.
  4. Found one more example. I just received the two blades that I recently inquired about in this thread http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/20489-need-help-with-two-blades/#and upon inspection I saw that the 'Tenshin' blade has W-stamps on both sides of the nakago. I was about to ask about them when I noticed that the topic had already been brought up.
  5. Thanks, I'll update if I notice anything interesting once I'm able to inspect it.
  6. Hi, first name is Cory. Thanks to everyone for the info so far. I don't have them in hand yet so all I have are the photos from the listing. Here's one more if it might help.
  7. I haven't been bitten by the Ebay bug for a long time now but I came across this listing for two bare out of polish blades found by the seller in a storage auction and I decided to grab them ($530 shipped). One of them looks to be a run of the mill gunto with a chippy mei and Seki stamp, but it's the other one that caught my eye as it's clearly never been mounted. I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on how unique it might be to find a blade with no mekugi ana? I'm guessing it probably wouldn't have been signed if there was a defect of some sort and the war may have ended before it was completed? Any translation/date assistance or other relevant information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
  8. Now that's what I call a Pepsi challenge! Awesome test, thanks for going through all that trouble to post this. I have limited experience with most of the listed products but I would definitely give a thumbs down to Rem Oil, and I've been told to stay away from WD-40 because it actually contains an abrasive. Personally I am very impressed with Wilson Combat's Ultima-Lube. Since Wilson arguably makes the world's best custom handguns I tried using their oil on my blades and have been very happy with it. It comes in several viscosities ranging from extra light oil to grease and I have found the standard oil is my favorite.

Having had experience with both, I strongly recommend that you go with the latter.
  10. Did someone add that to try and increase the sale price, or is it original to the blade? http://www.ebay.com/itm/321296838724
  11. Do you drive a Ferrari?
  12. I have a star stamped Kanehisa in the second type - unlacquered ito, metal saya. Blade is dated May '45, so maybe they were using any koshirae they could get at that point? Not a Showa-to at least.
  13. This is only the second copper handle I've seen on Ebay in the last four years or so. Machine made or not, it's a difficult spot to fill in a collection.
  14. The mei looks nicely cut, hope it wasn't anything too special. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251373139343
  15. I bought a blade from him once and the condition was misrepresented as confirmed by more knowledgeable people on this forum. He also has a reputation for doctoring up the items he sells and using acid to enhance his blades. There's an old thread on this board somewhere. Be wary.
  16. Those 419eater stories are great. I never got one to put a fish on his head, but this is the ID that one sent me 'proving' he worked at a bank that had a large sum of money waiting for me. somehow the picture wasn't what I was expecting. Unfortunately the Chinese scammer doesn't seem to be too eager to put in much effort on his part.
  17. That's a heck of an oil painting! I was hoping that the next highest bidder in the sword auction (which also happens to be me using a different account) would get a second chance offer so I could chime in with a different personality. Oh well. With luck they will give me a physical address for alternative payment so I can forward it to Brian.
  18. Excuse me but I've been waiting patiently in good faith for you to respond so that we can complete this collectable rare transaction and now I see that you have listed the same collectable rare sword under a different account! http://www.ebay.com/itm/321156206143 Maybe you aren't familiar with how Ebay works but a deal is a deal. I know that my winning bid is a bargain for a collectable rare piece such as this, but it isn't fair for you list it again to try to get more money for it from someone else. Was there a problem with the required import documentation? If so, is there a way we could arrange for me to send the payment without going through Paypal? hello my friend , have not problem with the required import documentation , please pay the order asap . That's just it, in order to pay using Paypal or Ebay's checkout system I need the documentation first before I can proceed. Especially now with the NSA reading my emails. I want to pay as soon as possible so I can get the sword in time for the Compton shinsa and have been waiting patiently for the documents, but I've heard nothing in two weeks and now I see that the EXACT SAME SWORD has been relisted for sale. It makes me worry you are going to sell it to someone else for a higher price because I got such a deal. If that's the case I might be able to throw in some extra cash if it will help.
  19. hello my friend , ok , please pay the order . Of course, right away as soon as I get that tortoise documentation so I can provide it to Ebay. I was considering ways to maybe get around Ebay's strict rules but then I discovered that Paypal is actually a division of Ebay and the contact I spoke with insisted that proof be shown that it does not come from an endangered species before payment can be processed by them. The Paypal representative specifically said that a signed and notarized letter from the CWCA http://en.cwca.org.cn/Article/ShowClass.asp?ClassID=25 would be acceptable for that purpose and since the sword is currently in China I'm hoping it won't be too much trouble to swing by and get them to inspect it?? I sure hope we are able to get this worked out soon.
  20. hello my friend , ok , no problem , i can provide documentation to you . thans xiaoan5567 Super, such a relief
  21. hello my friend , ok , no problem , i can put this katana in the steel/ metal pipe tube to hide from X-Ray . That sounds kind of scary, I wouldn't want the customs officials to think it was a bomb or something and I could end up in Guantanamo or even Fresno! To be safe I'd rather just do it legitimately with the proper import documentation. Here is the link to Ebay's rules http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/wildlife.html
  22. Yay the sword is mine, but I'm a little concerned that they somehow have my personal email address. In literally hundreds of Ebay transactions I have only ever received messages through the Ebay message system. But there it is, a payment invoice sent directly to my inbox by them. I was not aware Ebay gave that information out. Worst case scenario I guess they could put me on some horrendous spam mailing list and I'll have to change my email. No answer to my previous question so I replied with this. "Wow, I'm so excited. As soon as you get back to me about the concern in my previous message I'll get the payment sent. I can't wait!"
  23. I'll be having one with you :D . Don't know if you caught this link I posted above, but this one that I did a few years ago was awesome! Definitely worth the read. http://www.wcnews.com/chatzone/threads/ ... mer.21029/ No reply yet to my Ebay query, but the auction is close to ending.
  24. Message sent by me to the seller.... Hello, as you know Ebay and Paypal have strict guidelines concerning transactions involving the importation of items from foreign countries that are made from material obtained from an endangered animal species. Assuming I end up winning this fabulous sword, are you able to provide documentation that the handle was not made from any of these listed tortoise species? http://www.treehugger.com/natural-scien ... ecies.html You have probably heard how the Obama administration and the Department of Homeland Security have recently begun cracking down on it after the Sarute Mexican gorilla hand smuggling operation was busted.
  25. Thought it would be fun to get in a fake bidding war that would run the price into the stratosphere, and since these people run on greed it would make them more likely to give up some personal information once my Paypal payment doesn't work out. The idea isn't to have Ebay close the listings so they can just come back again, it's to get some info that Brian's people can use to dish out some Chinese justice. I had the Nigerian guy in the link I posted go through the effort of making up a fake ID to prove he was actually the president of some world bank and even got his physical address in Lagos. I've been outbid, likely by the seller himself so I'll go ahead and increase my bid. Come on - someone jump in.
