Hi,

I habitually troll ebay to admire swords for sale (aka window shopping :)) and came across this sword.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/280891514709?ss ... 915wt_1185

Upfront: I am not considering buying it. It's purely window shopping for educational and recreational purposes only.

Question: Does it look to be what the seller claims it to be: a 14th century tachi? It doesn't look right to me, but what do I know? The nakago doesn't look right. It's too new. It also looks like it has not been shortened (or significantly shortened anyhow), and 30 1/2" seems a little short in that case. Am I being a total idiot and barking up the wrong tree here?

The seller is no amateur when it comes to Nihonto, and I think his descriptions are usually close to accurate.

Can't tell if it is indeed a Koto...without origami you should always be wary...but the hada and hamon look ok, as does the sugata. Nakago patina is only a guide. You can have well preserved old swords, and new swords with tons of rust. Nakago is iffy...but hada looks right. He does seem to be giving a guarantee?

Anyways, at the price point seems a fair deal. I expect it will go quite a bit higher.

Just looking at the dimensions and shape I am not sure why people are opting for shinto. At first impression I would go with late-ish Koto. Based on what else can be seen (or not) I wouldnt want to go much further than that.

"Guaranty genuine & authentic", but also, "No returns or exchanges"......but then, "item is covered by eBay Buyer Protection". :dunno:

To me, I would go with sue koto as well...There is nothing about this sword that points to shinto in my opinion.....

This seller also has a long showa-to for sale on ebay that he calls a "shrine sword". There is nothing about it that substantiates that claim. The sho stamp is readily apparent.

I would take the claims made in these auctions with a grain of salt....
