I recently just bought a samurai sword from a estate sale and im trying to identify when it was made. I removed the handle to look for markings on the tang and i found this paper. The tang is covered in dark brown rust, and this paper was sitting on the tang, there is a area on the tang were you can see where this paper had been sitting for some time.. i don't see any visible markings on the tang itself, but im not a expert. any help i would greatly appreciate!

Hi J..,

I don't know what the paper says, but the blade has all the telltale signs of being a repro/fake Japanese sword, at least as far as my limited Nihonto skills can tell me. The tang is pretty much wrong in every aspect as far as I'm concerned, the same goes for the kissaki(tip). I won't go into the rest.

Sorry to be the one to break it to you if you had good hopes of having a real Japanese sword, but I hope you can learn some stuff about Nihonto along the way. If I am wrong about my evaluation and this is something (weird) I haven't seen before someone will happily correct me, and I'll learn something myself along the way :)

Greets,

seems the person was not really interested in learning about nihonto, just trying to use us to make money. too bad. i see the seller has NO RETURN and will charge $30 to mail a sword that should cost about $10

Actually..I bet he was expecting to keep it once he bought it, but on finding it was yet another fake, he decided to dump it as fast as possible.

Oh well....whatcha gonna do :dunno: :freak:
