Edward G Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Good Evening Everyone. Attached photos are of a recent acquisition in Gunto Mounts. It has a 27 1/2/" cutting edge with a sori of 1" measured from habaki to tip of sword. I am in need of assistance with the translation of this sword. The translationI come up with is Bishu Osafune (Kuni or Kane) Mitsu Saku....On the date side it is very difficult to read the era, I really cannot say. Any help would be appreciated. This sword is not without flaws, but considering the possible age of it, I am astonished. Any thoughts as to who the swordsmith is and the date of the item is what I would like to know. Thanks to all Edward G. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted April 14, 2011 Report Posted April 14, 2011 Hi Edward, The date is too faint for my old eyes, and what you have already for the signature is about all I can make out. The patina on the nakago looks wrong and the sori is too strong for what is likely a Late Koto sword. I think there is at least a chance this sword is retempered. Hope I'm wrong. Grey Quote
Edward G Posted April 14, 2011 Author Report Posted April 14, 2011 Thank You Grey, the photos have been all digitally enhanced to show more of the inscription....Although you are exactly correct the Patina is off, as the previous owner did some cleaning (*&^%$+_!!@@) on the tang. Thank You for your contribution. Edward G. Quote
