Ben Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Hello, I'm new to the forum and I just trade a blade that is supposed to be a gunto. I know nothing about kanji. Someone can help me understanding the mei? Thank you very much! Quote
cabowen Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Looks like a Chinese fake.....Showa date.....appears to be march 13, 1974... Quote
Ben Posted November 2, 2010 Author Report Posted November 2, 2010 Thank you Chris. At least it's a beautiful fake. Look at the pics! Do you think it have some value? Benoit Quote
cabowen Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Hmmm, hamon looks acid etched and being artificial, it wouldn't even be useful as a cutting blade....you might get a couple hundred on ebay.... Quote
Max C Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 The fittings are also interesting (except for the ito). http://img132.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=14685306.jpg If its a chinese fake its the best I ever saw. As for being inneficient as a cutting blade, it depends on the steel, the hamon hasn't much to do if traditional methods weren't used, many modern production katana have fake hamon and cut very well. I agree with Chris that is probably a fake. If you're going to cut with a blade-you'd want to know it's been hardened. Most of the ones you are most likely referring to- if they do cut well, without losing their edge will be through hardened with a fake Hamon. I'm talking about production blades though-not Fakes. cabowen Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The hamon indicates the blade has a hardened edge. If the edge hasn't been hardened and only a cosmetic hamon applied, it will not hold an edge and thus be worthless as a cutting instrument. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 This is a fake. No question. A fake and nothing but. The hamon is cosmetic and ugly. Please do not try to cut with it. If you do you risk serious injury if/when the blade shatters. It has value only as a wall hanger, whatever someone who doesn't know better will pay. Grey Quote
