Binnawan Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Gents, This is not nihonto related, but I hope someone on the board can assist with the translation. I have an old bamboo cup, purchased in an antique shop in Singapore 40+ years ago, and which I always believed had a Chinese inscription and a view of the willow pattern garden. Chinese friends have been unable to translate the 'kanji' and say it is either old chinese script or possibly Japanese. The pattern is not in fact willow pattern, but a scene in an oriental garden. I aplogise for the scratchy attempt to duplicate! Thanks Baz Ford Quote
Nobody Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 They surely are orthodox kanji. Their style looks like Tensho. I think I can decipher some of them for now. But I do not understand the meaning as a whole. Quote
sturmbichon Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Just textoed the pics to my wife and she says it looks like an old Japanese poem. she's trying to translate it. More later i hope... Quote
sturmbichon Posted July 13, 2010 Report Posted July 13, 2010 Should be a commercial or promotional item... She got partial translation. The first part means textually: "Need to hydrate? Thirsty? Skin Bamboo" then the last characters means nothing altogether: "Beauty tale, the right colon" SO.... maybe with a great digestive tract, this beverage will bring beauty.... My wife adds: "looks like some stupid western tatoo that do not make any xxxxing sense"... Quote
k morita Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Binnawan, Kanji characters of the cup are Chinese. And not poem. Maybe, it is a cup to drink for Chinese medicine. Quote
Binnawan Posted July 15, 2010 Author Report Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks for interesting replies gents. Attached pics of the cup, maybe clearer than my scratchy attempt! Quote
raaay Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Hi Baz Your "cup" looks like a chinese brush pot. regards ray Quote
Binnawan Posted July 15, 2010 Author Report Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks Morita San, I like that better than 'healthy colon"! Baz Ford Quote
