jason_mazzy Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-sword-scabbard- ... 2306a74f97 Reminds me of a kyugunto command saber the generals had like this: http://www.h4.dion.ne.jp/~t-ohmura/gunto_093.htm Very well could not be Japanese in the slightest. just reminded me of a parade blade and that Generals blade quite a bit. Bugyotsuji Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 No information given, so hard to judge exacty when and why these were made. We can surely say that they are however Japanese style. Quote
IanB Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 Jason, Definitely NOT Japanese. If you look carefully, the hilt ornament is a monogram surmounted by a crown. I cannot see the decoration on the shell-guard properly but I can see a sceptre being held by I think and eagle. My guess is German / Austrian / Bohemian or similar. This kind of sword was turned out in vast quantities in places like Solingen during the 19th century for clients all over the world, each decorated to suit the government or ruler of the client country. Bruno Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 id vote no, not Nipponese I was joking, not Japanese to me neither. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 Oops, sorry, clicked on the second, but didn't look at the first link! Quote
jason_mazzy Posted April 21, 2010 Author Report Posted April 21, 2010 ok I found it interesting as an unknown sword, that had many simalarities tothe Japanese generals type swords, yet a few different things such as the crown. It id odd so many sabers from around the worl had so many similarities, when the katana itself was vastly different in many ways from traditional swords. Quote
Takahashi Posted April 21, 2010 Report Posted April 21, 2010 Jason, it is not that surprising, if you keep in mind that the Japanese adapted the european style during the Meiji period. Cheers, Quote
Weidas Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 Jason, i don't see any similarities between sword in e-bay and Japanese dress swords. With all due respect, i would like to suggest you not only to look but also study, at least basics, about Japanese military swords. This would help you to recognize at least obvious fakes and clearly non - Japanese swords. I myself started that way and it helped me very very much Quote
IanB Posted April 22, 2010 Report Posted April 22, 2010 Joe, No not British. The shell guard is decorated with an eagle holding a sceptre in its left leg. There is an S in the monogram but the image is too blurred to make out any more. Jason, It isn't surprising that similar swords were being adopted around the world for the simple reason that almost all were being made by the same people from fairly standard components. The only specific items for an individual customer would generally be the pommel and shell guard, and possibly any etching on the blade. All the rest of the bits would be more or less standard from stock. Ian Bottomley Quote
