davel Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 GPT is translating this as a bayonet (銃剣?) sword but how exactely is that being mounted on a rifle if that's true? And did somebody photoshopped this habaki or are we looking at a real one :)? 1 Quote
Geraint Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Dear Dave. GPT is doing you no favours here, nothing to do with bayonets. However I can through no light on the habaki, it is something I have not seen in more years of study than I care to reveal. Looking forward to what this throws up. All the best. 1 Quote
davel Posted October 12 Author Report Posted October 12 Thxs for the confirmation Geraint. Seems like it's better to feed GPT piece by piece and not a whole page. Let's see if we can solve the habaki mystery as well Quote
Lewis B Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 These are the kanji for tanto I think thats what we have here. Bayonets have a very different design and shape. I doubt Tamahagane would be used for such a mundane application. Regarding the habaki I wonder if someone installed it upside down. The design with the step over the hamachi looks odd, as does the mune sitting proud of the habaki. 1 1 Quote
Jussi Ekholm Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 Unfortunately I have stopped using Instagram so going through the photos there is impossible but I believe this should be the smith who made this sword. https://www.instagram.com/yoh.miyairi/ Quote

I dont see any way to have gotten the habaki that high up on the nakago if it were upside down.Whatever the reason, its strange it actually went to print like that. Quote
Nobody Posted October 12 Report Posted October 12 I suspect that someone who does not know well about habaki photoshopped to add the image of it to the picture. 2 Quote

That's a bit like saying the drunk guy I met at the pub said... Nothing on the page mentions a bayonet, it states tanto (短刀). The character for gun or bayonet doesn't appear anywhere? Quote
Scogg Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 I think what your GBT thought was 銃剣, is actually 特賞 Quote

Geraint Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 The miss assembly goes further than just upside-down, the outer sleeve of the habaki is the right way up the inside is reversed. I am surprised that worked but it seems to have. I bet the smith is groaning, you get your work published and then someone does that to it. All the best. Quote
Lewis B Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 I think the PS explanation is valid. The PS monkey could have just extended the inner sleeve to over the hamachi. The habachi looks 2-dimensional in the photo. Quote

Indeed, emailed them and got this reply : While our expert suggests this appears to be a photo compositing mistake made during the editing process... 2 Quote
Tcat Posted November 2 Report Posted November 2 Makes one wonder just how much editing goes into dealer / auction / online catalogue photos. Sometimes I feel that a simple phone camera with unedited photos is more honest. Quote
