Very impressive, cant remember ever seeing one here before, thanks.

Glad I've never ever had to ship one, can only imagine it may have been bit of a dilemma.

There’s a Japanese expression, ‘Oni ni kanabō’ 鬼に鉄棒

Giving a metal club to an ogre means further enabling someone already fearful.

Awesome! I guess not many antique Kanabo exists today. No armor could protect from getting bashed with this monster.

PS. Cool looking armor in the background!

Thank you for posting this Gary, very cool item. I must admit I have never understood this weapon but it is super cool.

Jussi , thanks. I can only imagine a great deal of blunt trauma ! Other than seeing them in woodblock prints I can't remember reading about units like Nagamaki groups being used tactically. If anyone has a good reference please point me to it.

The shock of the blunt force is not stopped by armour so bones and organs are destroyed even through the heaviest armour.

Like a western maul of war hammer.

If this is what you meant?

The kind of thing you might hand to a giant Sumo wrestler in your army to scare the enemy. Saw one of these for sale at an Japanese antiques fair a year or two back. Seriously tempted, but two things stayed my hand.

1. It was more than I was willing to pay, although I remember debating whether to make a run to a cash machine anyway.

2. Without some clever packing, it wouldn't have fitted into my suitcase.
