Hi,

I've seen a couple of claimed wwii gunto's up for auction in the last couple of months in the UK, but to my untrained eye, the Kabuto-gane ( hope this is the correct term!) and the odd flattened top loops seemed off - I've attached two different examples. I only saw off as I couldn't see anything like this on any site showing lots of examples of wwii swords.

Quite enjoy reading about the more common fakes so would be interested to know if this is a common sign, or alternatively if it could be legitimate.

I didn't buy either so no urgency, purely curious!

Dear Fred.

From the images posted both of these look to be low quality reproductions.  Further images would help.

All the best.

Tsuba looks like casted together with smaller tsuba with rays. Menuki bad made. Looks more like barn project made by amateur or cheap wallhanger.

Hi Fred,

Just my opinion, but I don't think you will regret not buying this.

The poor (flat) quality of the ashi ....same as the kabutogane and fuchi.  Looks like a Chinese knock off pretending to be a Type 97 Kai Gunto.

Interesting 'patina' on the samegawa but I suppose that can be done.

The tsuba and dai seppa also look naval style but pics aren't too clear.

In any event, it wouldn't get my money (but I have been wrong in the past ... a few times ;-))

Would be good to see the nakago and blade if the opportunity ever arose. That should shed more light on it.
