Lewis B Posted March 29, 2025 Report Posted March 29, 2025 Gorgeous workmanship. What was interesting was the silver finish inside the various hitsu ana. Was that a common design feature? 2 Quote
Jesta Posted March 30, 2025 Report Posted March 30, 2025 Nice piece. Is the silver a finish, or an insert? I have seen gold trim inserted into the ana to line it before. 1 Quote
Spartancrest Posted March 30, 2025 Report Posted March 30, 2025 Even some "rustic" - and rusty tsuba can have silver inserts. https://www.jauce.com/auction/v1178919843 As Justyn has asked - are they inserts or is the tsuba made up of a three layers? [Beautiful piece by the way ] 1 Quote

Jesta Posted March 31, 2025 Report Posted March 31, 2025 Looking at the images in the listing it would appear that the silver is some sort of wash or thin plating, since it was wear patterns consistent with the ana being used. Very interesting to see this as a feature. It is very subtle, but effective. Quote
Jesta Posted March 31, 2025 Report Posted March 31, 2025 This is an example from my own collection. Although… looking at it now I can’t quite decide if they are inserts or plating. There is a slightly raised lip, which feels like an insert, but it could just be the design. 1 Quote
Lewis B Posted March 31, 2025 Author Report Posted March 31, 2025 I too find the design feature especially elegant as illustrated in your example. Looking more closely at the images in the listing I think its a silver insert as shown in Dale's but the facing edges have been stained black (you can see some run over in the side images) such that only the inner surface retains its shiny silver colour. 1 Quote

Yes, could well be tarnishing instead. I like the feature, it makes the ana really stand out. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted March 31, 2025 Report Posted March 31, 2025 Lewis, the photo is not ideal to make a statement, but I would like to know what makes this TSUBA an OMORI school item. Is it signed or accompanied by papers? An unusual design in my eyes. Quote

ROKUJURO Posted March 31, 2025 Report Posted March 31, 2025 Ah yes, thank you! I thought the link was for the rusty TSUBA! As I said, unfamiliar design and technique for me. Quote

Personally, I thought this was high grade Kaga Kinko up there with some of the examples in the Kaga Kinko Taikan. 2 1 Quote

Quaint but not for me... But did you catch that Fujin tsuba that just sold for 4000 AUD? That one was right up my alley and way beyond my financial limitations! Would have liked to display it alongside the tengu kashira in my profile picture but alas, some big spenders locked eyes on it! There are a pair of other certified Omori school fuchigashira on Jauce up for grabs right now for anyone interested in this specific style... 1 Quote

There are some designs that just belong >95% to one school. I should have considered that. Also, I do not know Omori tsuba that well-- Which means that I would not know if something about the geometry of the tsuba was also more Omori than Kaga. I do think it a lovely tsuba. I hated living in Florida, but some of images of the coast are good ones in the memory banks. This tsuba has some of that. Quote
