WellsFargo Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Hello gents, I have a question. What do you guys do with your collection? I am a beginning collector and now have three pieces; a katana, wakizashi and, since yesterday, also a yari. I have them displayed in my livingroom on katanakake's, and when we're away from home I put them in my gunsafe. I've purchased these weapons because of their beauty and I want to be able to look at them. But as we all know it's a lot of money, and my father (a fellow guncollector who keeps his valuable pieces in the safe at all times) always pushes me to keep them in my safe.... what do you guys do? Maybe keep one or two pieces out of the safe on display, and "rotate" so that every piece gets their "display time"?? Every time I go to bed, I feel a slight discomfort knowing that if some punk who breaks in sees these items and decides: "hey, I might get 50 bucks for them on the black market..." I quiver at the thought... My apologies before hand for this post. I can most definately imagine that you guys do not want to share when and how your collection is "out of the safe". It is however becoming an issue for me. If you could give me some ideas that would be great. Thank you guys in advance. Jan-Wouter Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 I have all my art in a room, 4 locks on the door, stainless steel expanded metal covering the window, swords in a katanadansu when home and in a safe when away. I still worry. I forgot to mention the alarm system. The only time my swords are available for friends to see is when invited. The general aquaintences that come to my home are not aware of what is in my study. Loose lips and all that, may get to thieves. John Quote
Grey Doffin Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 Hi Jan, Unless I'm looking at a sword in my collection, it is tucked away. Too many things (the kid, the cat, the wife, visitors, and uninvited guests) can go wrong to leave a good sword out. Grey Quote
WellsFargo Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 Okay... thanks John... now I'm worrying even more! :D :D :D Yours sounds like a very good sollution, but unfortunately it would take quite some remodeling of my home to arrange such an "art-chamber". It is however something I've always wanted so it's interesting to look into. J.W. Quote
WellsFargo Posted December 14, 2009 Author Report Posted December 14, 2009 Thanks Grey, Yeah, my son was born 5 months ago and I'm already wondering what to do when he starts walking. I know when I was a kid and my dad wasn't home... I was chopping branches in the yard with his sabres and bajonets... I guess I'll just have to place them in my safe.... I really enjoy just sitting on my couch looking at my swords. It feels like buying a beautiful painting which you enjoy looking at and then storing it in a safe. It bothers me, but I guess it's the wise thing to do. Quote
Carlo Giuseppe Tacchini Posted December 14, 2009 Report Posted December 14, 2009 It feels like buying a beautiful painting which you enjoy looking at and then storing it in a safe. Paintings, carpets, porcelain hardly cuts arteriae even if they are good targets for a robbery. I put them in my gunsafe. Safe is the best choice IMHO. Especially if the safe is fireproof (as much as they can be...). Hygrometer is useful to maintain the right level of humidity. Sons, friends of sons, friends of wife, the housekeeping woman... Naa, too many to leave them out, for me. Quote
goose710 Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 I have my swords and guns in my den, displayed, the house is well gaurded by my neighbors, of course this doesn't guarantee anything but i feel it cuts down on the probabilities. I have a GOOD fireproof safe for my stamps and all the papers for the swords. We have few guests over and i don't advertise my collectables save for some trusted friends When the grand kids are over i put away any blades that may get disturbed by the girls playing I like to have them (the swords) out to look at as i feel to , hiding them away feels wrong to me. drbvac Posted December 15, 2009 Report Posted December 15, 2009 Me too - They are in my den with some pics of the guys in various other pursuits - fishing golf etc as well as my pool table and some other stuff . I like to be able to pick one up when I feel like it and not have to remember a combination. Different part of the world I know and I probably should lock them up but - heres some as they sit @ Quote
WellsFargo Posted December 16, 2009 Author Report Posted December 16, 2009 Brian.... that's absolutely beautiful. I must say I'm feeling some jealousy at the moment. :D thanks for your reply. Jan-Wouter Quote
