Can anyone help?

I'm looking for help with translating or identifying the markings on in this picture. They are on the tang of what we believe to be a WWII sword, possibly an NCO's sword that my father-in-law's family brought back. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good Morning, Your sword appears to be a WW2 sword. The signature Is KANE TOSHI. There were several swordsmiths that used this name during the war, not sure which one.

Could be Murayama Kanetoshi, a good Gendai smith.

It would be from an officer sword, not NCO.  Do you have the fittings, or just a blade?  More photos would be appreciated.

 

Also, any small stamps elsewhere on the nakago (tang)?

Try cropping like John did for you

Yes, I've tried the cropping idea and it works.  Even just a small crop seems to do the trick.
