Jimny Posted December 10, 2023 Report Posted December 10, 2023 Another sword for review, From my researh It would appear to be the Mino Hidemoto from around 1850? As for the blade does anyone have a rough idea as to a period as despite being a mumei with some flaws the koshirae seems quite nice other than the tsuba which does not fit particularly well so i'm guessing someone sold it in the past. Also as it is going to need rewrapping what ito would be recommended the same gold or would a different colour go better with the fittings? Thanks. 1 Quote
dwmc Posted December 15, 2023 Report Posted December 15, 2023 Very nice-looking sword Perry albeit tsuka wrap damage and tsuba most likely not original to sword. Judging from the appearance of the nakago patina, yasurime all but worn away, with the mekugi-ana appearing to be drilled rather than punched, I would say Shinshinto, mid 1800's, about the same time period as the koshirae. I would use the same original colored Tsuka Ito were it me... Regards, Dave M. 1 Quote
Jimny Posted December 16, 2023 Author Report Posted December 16, 2023 Cheers for the info, I have sent it off to be rewrapped in a golden brown colour so hopefully will look close to how it was. Now to hunt for a matching Tsuba which I am going to guess will be similar to the koshirae (dragon themed) rather than the crane themed menuki. I can see this being an expensive quest lol. Quote
Iaido dude Posted January 6, 2024 Report Posted January 6, 2024 Hello all, I just joined and this is my first forum participation. I noticed that the fuchi theme of dragon doesn’t match that of menuki (appears to be birds). How often is that the case in nihonto with original tsuba/fuchi/koshirae? Cheers, Steve 1 Quote
ROKUJURO Posted January 7, 2024 Report Posted January 7, 2024 Steve, when you have studied swords for a few decades, questions like these are answered easily. What we would see as a "match" is not necessarily one for Japanese people or in "Japanese taste". Often, there are myths and legends or allegoric themes represented which we Westernes do not always know or understand. 5 Quote
Mark C Posted January 7, 2024 Report Posted January 7, 2024 Hi Perry, Nice looking sword. Can I ask who is doing the wrap please? I.ve had all matching themes and some that don't match at all, I think it as Jean says, Us westerners do not always know or understand. 1 Quote

Hi I had Dave Collins from Kawagishi.co.uk cost £195 for the silk, Wrapping and Uk postage. I have included the After pics for review in any case. 1 Quote
raaay Posted January 25, 2024 Report Posted January 25, 2024 Sorry but IMHO, a poor attempt at a re-wrap of the Tsuka . 3 Quote

Jimny Posted January 25, 2024 Author Report Posted January 25, 2024 That's a shame, I cant say i was ecstatic when I got it back but I thought it was just me being overly picky. Guess I will have to teach myself next time I need to do a rewrap. Quote
Jimny Posted January 27, 2024 Author Report Posted January 27, 2024 Quick update, The wrap became quite loose but I got in touch with Mr Collins on the phone today and he was pleasant when I told him the issues and he agreed to redo the wrap, Fingers crossed this one will turn out better. Will update with the results when I get it back. Quote
