PNSSHOGUN Posted August 7, 2023 Report Posted August 7, 2023 When it's this close and was obviously a Katana originally, the Wakizashi definition seems rather arbitrary. Nice looking sword though, it looks to closely follow the 3rd or 4th Gen workmanship. 1 Quote

My point precisely : The Warring Times, the slightly suriage mono uchi (or kazu-uchi 🤭) that got classified as wakizashi although the fact they had for the most part mainly 24-26" of nagasa for the close combat technique at the time.. Longer ones were the 'traditional' samurai in lame terms. how could a .8 cm short of katana wakizashi not be a katana after the aforementioned facts? Fair price slippery slope .. Y Quote
Guest Simon R Posted August 7, 2023 Report Posted August 7, 2023 Ye gods. Tsuruta-san does talk a load of old flannel, sometimes. "In my opinion, this sword shares strong similarities with the works of the 2nd-generation (Kanemoto)." Oh really? Since when has Seki no Maguroku had a perfectly symmetrical sanbon sugi hamon? "...the Tokyo National Museum identifies it as Kanemoto Masamoto (3rd-generation). Perhaps, they are considering it as a work from the 3rd-generation." No s**t, Sherlock. If they had considered it 2nd generation, you certainly wouldn't be putting in an auction starting at ¥450,000 - you'd be privately offering it to all your top-end Japanese customers first. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 7, 2023 Report Posted August 7, 2023 John, nowadays, we have a sharp definition by the NBTHK: TANTO = less than 1 SHAKU WAKIZASHI: between 1 and 2 SHAKU KATANA/TACHI: more than 2 SHAKU 1 SHAKU = 303 mm The older terms like O-TANTO, SUN NOBI TANTO, KO-WAKIZASHI and O-WAKIZASHI, CHIISA GATANA, UCHI GATANA, KATATE UCHI a.s.o. are seen as historical terms referring to the time of production of a blade.
