John A Stuart Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Hi All, What is the proper term for 'country work', like has been discussed in the thread about a Tosho tsuba. Is it; '田舎物"? If not, I would like to know the proper term. John Quote
Mark Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 i have heard it called Wakimono but that does not seem to match your kanji so maybe there are multiple terms used Quote
Rich T Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 Hi John, it is Inaka mono 田舎物, "the work of a country artist" so yes, that matches your kanji. I have been working on my Kodogu glossary for my blog, and there is a page there now (were I got this reading/kanji from). It's a work in progress but it's coming together slowly. http://richardturner.wordpress.com/kodogu-glossary/ Cheers Rich Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 27, 2009 Author Report Posted April 27, 2009 Thanks guys, I thought those would be the likely kanji, trying to derive 'cottage crafts', good to know. I haven't visited your blog, Rich, since before its' resurrection. I will have to do so. John Quote
Nobody Posted April 27, 2009 Report Posted April 27, 2009 I have not heard the term “inakamono (田舎物)” especially with those kanji and that meaning. Is the term commonly used in Tosogu field? When we say inakamono, it is usually written as 田舎者, and it means a yokel. Quote
John A Stuart Posted April 27, 2009 Author Report Posted April 27, 2009 Ah, a 'country person', I understand 'yokel'. When I asked about those kanji it was my translation of 'country craft' or 'cottage craft'. I did not know if '田舎物' was a term to be used or its' pronunciation. When Rich recognised the kanji as in use I thought fine it is descriptive enough. Maybe Rich can tell us the origins of the term. I could see it causing an embarrassing situation in a conversation where as an homonym for yokel someone could be offended. John Quote
