Caracal Posted March 29, 2022 Report Posted March 29, 2022 Strange Tsuba A very large tsuba with an unknown motive. What could this be for Tsuba. What can it be made of and what Era can it be from. Grateful for information. //Robert 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted March 29, 2022 Report Posted March 29, 2022 Appears to be a shingen saotome tsuba. https://varshavskycollection.com/shingen-tsuba/ https://www.google.com/search?q=shingen+saotome+tsuba+nihonto+site:www.militaria.co.za&sxsrf=APq-WBtnIIFcXzqCjA8uUaE8zZcMifP7ow:1648588558669&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwjU7a37nuz2AhWxjIkEHWtGCWwQrQIoBHoECAsQBQ&biw=1920&bih=969&dpr=1 1 Quote
roger dundas Posted March 29, 2022 Report Posted March 29, 2022 Just amazing to see the amount of work and effort that has gone into producing this great example A monument to an unknown maker (unknown in present times) and is it any wonder that we like to collect or maybe just admire these fascinating creations. Bugyotsuji Posted March 30, 2022 Report Posted March 30, 2022 The caption says 'unusually large', and the explanation calls it 'giant', but no measurements are given. Perhaps they were so time-consuming to make that simpler versions with symbolic features evolved into what are now more generally called 'Shingen' tsuba? Having just read Ray's excellent Varshavsky link above, I am editing this post. We live and learn! The NMB thread link seems quite old; I think there are others on this site regarding woven Shingen and Mukade styles. 1 Quote
