raynor Posted November 11, 2021 Report Posted November 11, 2021 Hi, could someone help me translate this origami from the NTHK? Included writing on the envelope as well to be safe. Much appreciated. Quote

raynor Posted November 12, 2021 Author Report Posted November 12, 2021 Thanks Ray. The other writings not saying anything of notice? Quote
Shugyosha Posted November 12, 2021 Report Posted November 12, 2021 Hi Omar, I'm pleased to see that you finally got the papers - I'll have a go at adding to what Ray wrote. Starting with the column next to the mei and date: 鍛 : 小板目 - Kitae (forging pattern) - ko itame 刃紋 : 直刃に五の目 - hamon - suguba ni gunome - suguba with gunome. 鋩子 : 直ぐ小丸 - boshi - sugu komaru - straight with a small circular turn back. 中心 : Nakago - 目釘穴 - 壱 - mekugi ana - one, 鑢 - 片?肋違い, ?り出し - yasurime - this is where it gets a bit tricky, unfortunately there are a couple of kanji that I can't get here so I'm struggling to read this part. Four seals - these are the seals of the members of the shinsa panel and four of them agree with what is written on the paper. On the other side you have: 鑑定書 - kanteisho - written appraisal An abreviation of the smith's name "Kashu Masakuni". 正真 - Shoshin - genuine. 長さ - nagasa 弐尺参寸弐分有え - There are 2 shaku, 3 sun, 2 bu. Date of shinsa - Heisei, 31st year, 3rd month, 1st day. (1st March, 2019). 日本刀剣保存会 - Nihon Token Hozon Kai - the name of the issuing organisation. The above is repeated on the back of the envelope with "kanteisho" written on the front. 3 1 Quote

John presented an almost perfect translation. I can only add the following words. 鑢 (yasuri) - 片筋違い (kata-sujikai)、磨り出し (suridashi) 1 2 Quote
raynor Posted November 13, 2021 Author Report Posted November 13, 2021 Great, thanks both of you. Much appreciated. Yes John the origami finally appeared, with much appreciated assistance from Gordon at the NTHK. There was some kanji watermarks in the rice paper that is notoriously hard to photograph but I doubt they say anything interesting. Quote
