Winchester Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 Recently picked up this set of koshirae, tsuba, and saya. I am not certain what material the saya is and was wondering if you could help advise. It is very interesting also because there is almost like crushed 'mother of pearl' or some such material that shines almost a purple to green and white depending on how it is held in the light. Tried to get some photos but you almost have to see it in person. Any advice on how to care for the saya, tsuba, and koshirae is appreciated as I am a new collector. Thank you in advance. 1 Quote

Winchester Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Not the best pictures on my part, but it has dragons and fish throughout the koshirae and tsuba. Quote
John A Stuart Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 It may surprise one at what is used for effect in some nuri. This appears to me to be fish scales. It is a pleasant effect. John 2 Quote
Winchester Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Should I just periodically, wipe it down gently with a clean napkin to remove any fingerprints/oil.? Quote
John A Stuart Posted July 28, 2021 Report Posted July 28, 2021 I use a damp cloth. Pretty tough stuff. It shouldn't need much upkeep unless in a dusty environment. John Quote
Winchester Posted July 28, 2021 Author Report Posted July 28, 2021 Thank you, John. It is in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. Quote
Winchester Posted August 1, 2021 Author Report Posted August 1, 2021 Sorry friends as a new collector, I posted this in the wrong area. Mods, should you wish, please move. Best to you and yours. Quote
ROKUJURO Posted August 2, 2021 Report Posted August 2, 2021 Brian, what you see sparkling in the SAYA lacquer is indeed a kind of mother of pearl (RADEN in Japanese), but from a sea-snail (Abalone). It is called AO-GAI. 1 Quote
Toryu2020 Posted August 2, 2021 Report Posted August 2, 2021 Nice looking lacquer work - could we see more photos - including one of the whole saya? -t 1 Quote
Winchester Posted August 2, 2021 Author Report Posted August 2, 2021 Friends, yes, I would be happy to share more photos with greater detail. I apologize if my original posts seemed somewhat dismissive...the quality is exceptional and I am very thankful to the kind man who sold it to me. I have just been really tired and burned out from work obligations...try to take off a few days and can't stop answering calls or emails...so it seems like the few vacation days I take, really, are not vacation, sadly. The tsuba and all fittings are papered and most excellent. The saya is just gorgeous in the proper light. Please give me a few days and i will get better photos in natural light/outside. Kindly, Brian 1 Quote
