Hi, I'm new to swords I've been looking at Japanese swords for a while and recently jumped on a tanto that caught my eye. I'm unsure whether it is a genuine article but would love any insight to whether it looks real, what style of tanto it could be and any information you guys might be able to glean about it.

The saya appears to be brass with wood inside and the rest seems to be brass as well.

I think it might be a shinogi based on the shape but I could be wrong

Let me know if you need any other info like sizes and etc and I'll see what I can do

Again, any information would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.

My gut feeling is that this is a fake. It could be heavily abused; but I'll let other members with far more experience here chime in.

Reasons being I think it is a fake:

Crude grain of the metal (looks acid-washed)

Improper shape of the boshi (tip)

Fittings are of rather crude design
What appears to be a WWII sarute (sword knot loop) on the kashira.

This could also be the remains of a tanto/wakizashi that has been mounted in more modern tourist fittings.

Dear Harry.

Chris has called this one, it's a fake.  Stick around and get your eye in, there is a heap of stuff to learn and a wealth of enjoyment ahead of you.

All the best.

Very very poor fake. I cannot find anything there that even resembles a real one. Sorry to be blunt.
Study first, then buy.
