Would like info on this type of tsukamaki

This is a picture of tsukamaki where the menuki are replaced with knots.

Does anyone know what type of tsukamaki this is and how it is done ?

That's quite strange, as menuki are there to help position the hands, not just for decoration.

Shikagawa-tsumami-maki 鹿革撮み巻 with yuidama 結玉, often seen on Tenshō-koshirae 天正拵.

Could it be for less weight or just a preferred look. Or as Tom said poor mans menuki.

I think it has more to do with a reaction on the previous elaborate koshirae style, tensho koshirae made as simple as possible.

Not that impressive: I just found out that 結玉 is actually pronounced "musubidama"   . Anyhow, I don't really know how it's done, maybe this photo helps:

That's a reef knot, or sometimes called a square knot, if that helps any budding tsukamakishi.

An earlier thread on this subject including some detailed PDFs from Jussi, it includes some detail on musubidama  and this mock up,

 

 

 However  I do not think that is what Hector illustrates in hi OP.  That looks more like the end knot from a tsuka.
