Alexmarq1986 Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 Hello, just wanted to see if someone here could help me and let me know if eBay item# 193238523031 is an authentic Type 98 WW2 Japanese Sword or is it some cheap Chinese copy. Thanks in advance. Alex M. Quote

Grey Doffin Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 Hi Alex, Study first; buy later. This book would be a good start. http://www.japaneseswordbooksandtsuba.com/store/books/b510-swords-imperial-Japan-1868-%E2%80%93-1945-cyclopedia-edition Grey Quote
Alexmarq1986 Posted December 7, 2019 Author Report Posted December 7, 2019 Thanks Grey for the advice. I will purchase that book now. Seller keeps saying it's not fake and that everyone is lying but says he will take it back when I receive it. Quote
PNSSHOGUN Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 Yes, a fake but not a terrible one, I can see how a new collector could be fooled. Many of us have made the same mistakes when we started so don't be embarrassed. For the amount you paid you can get original Shin Gunto Koshirae, up around the 1000usd mark is where authentic swords are readily available. I would advise reading through the military sword section here, this thread has many fine references to note: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/18610-show-us-your-high-class-gunto/ The classifieds here will have some bargains and will be all genuine as well. benatthelake Posted December 12, 2019 Report Posted December 12, 2019 Look carefully at the description.....he puts a question mark at the end of each sentence where authenticity can be considered.....sneaky! This WW2 Japanese Samurai Sword -WW II Officer? Gunto Katana? Sword. The tang is SIGNED with Asian Japanese or Chinese?character markings on the blade, there’s some kind of serial number markings on it (#10835). Above the handle on a metal plate . Sword Kinda looks like a type 98 but not sure?. I don’t know much about collecting old WW2 swords, or it’s original origin so please study pictures for condition details, may show wear due to age. I’m sure you collectors know what you’re looking at. I can’t find another like this design anywhere in existence? Ben Quote
Alexmarq1986 Posted December 12, 2019 Author Report Posted December 12, 2019 Yea, I saw it last minute and decided to bid and unlucky me won, seller keeps saying it's authentic and that I am letting a treasure get away from my hands and I will regret it, etc. The sword is already on its way back to seller for the refund. Thanks for all the help guys. 1 Quote
